Mount Kongo is a sacred peak rising to 1,125 meters, situated on the border between Osaka and Nara prefectures. Renowned as a significant site for Shugendo (mountain asceticism), the summit area is home to revered landmarks such as Katsuragi Shrine and Tenborin-ji Temple. It is a place where visitors can experience the profound connection between Japan's ancient mountain worship and the breathtaking natural landscapes.
Historically known as Mount Katsuragi or Mount Takama, this mountain holds deep spiritual significance. Records in the Nihon Shoki and legends of the ascetic practitioner En no Gyoja, who lived approximately 1,300 years ago, highlight its importance. It is said that En no Gyoja practiced here and established Tenborin-ji Temple, with its main deity, Hokki Bosatsu. During the late Kamakura period, the area also served as a strategic fortification, including Chihaya Castle, which is associated with the legendary warrior Kusunoki Masashige. Although the religious sites faced decline during the Meiji era due to the separation of Shinto and Buddhism, the community worked to restore these sacred sites in 1962. Today, it remains a vital center for Shingon Esoteric Buddhism and a place for spiritual and physical discipline.
The summit area is dotted with historical structures and ruins. Katsuragi Shrine, which enshrines the deity Hitokotonushi, is a central site of worship. Tenborin-ji Temple also attracts many hikers interested in the traditions of Shugendo. Visitors can discover fragments of history through the Hoken-to Sword Tower and various ruins of ancient fortifications. As you hike, the landscape changes with the seasons, offering views of diverse flora and the enduring atmosphere of mountain worship.
Mount Kongo reveals a different face in every season. Spring brings fresh greenery and blooming flowers, while autumn is famous for its vibrant foliage. It is generally recommended to hike during daylight hours. The route via the Fushimi Forest Road to the 'Chihaya Star and Nature Museum' is particularly excellent for observing natural scenery. Please note that temperatures can change rapidly, so plan your hike according to the weather and seasonal temperature shifts.
The primary activity is hiking, with various routes available for everyone from beginners to experienced climbers. You can choose the Chihaya Main Path from the Mount Kongo trailhead to reach the mountain plateau, or a more scenic route via the Fushimi Forest Road that passes by local facilities like the 'Chihaya Star and Nature Museum.' Whether walking through the woods or exploring historical sites, the mountain provides a sense of tranquility far removed from daily life.
The mountain is surrounded by the scenic areas of Chihasa Akasaka Village in Osaka and Gose City in Nara. The base areas feature bus stops and community bus stations, making it easy to explore the local villages. There are also several exhibition facilities in the vicinity that allow visitors to engage with the local natural environment before or after their hike.
Even on maintained paths, the terrain can be uneven and rocky; therefore, sturdy hiking shoes are essential. Because temperatures at the summit are significantly lower than at the base, please bring warm clothing and rain gear. To protect the environment, always carry your trash back with you and respect the local rules of the sacred sites.
