Komoro Castle Ruins Kaikoen is a historic park located in Komoro City, Nagano Prefecture, developed around the remains of a former castle site. While preserving the atmosphere of an Edo-period fortification, it now serves as a beloved space for both local relaxation and sightseeing. The park features historical structures that reveal the castle's former layout, surrounded by lush nature that changes beautifully with the seasons. This site was once the stronghold of the Komoro Clan. In 1880, former retainers of the Komoro domain acquired the land extending from the Old San-no-mon Gate to the Honmaru (inner citadel) site. Later, in 1926, under the guidance of Seiroku Honda, the town of Komoro expanded the grounds to create a park that utilizes the natural landscape of the historical site. It is a vital cultural heritage site that preserves the history of the former castle town. The surrounding area also retains elements of the historic Nakasendo post town, including structures like the former Komoro Honjin, which is designated as a National Important Cultural Property, allowing visitors to deeply understand the regional historical context.
Throughout the park, historical remains are scattered for exploration. Stone walls that once defined the castle's structure and topographical features that tell the story of its defensive functions are preserved within the modern park setting. The seasonal flora is another major draw; the park is adorned with beautiful cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant autumn colors in the fall. The park is well-equipped with facilities that are easy for families to use while maintaining a historical atmosphere.
