Located in Achi Village, Nagano Prefecture, 'Komatsunagi no Sakura' is a majestic single cherry tree with a history of approximately 400 years, standing proudly beside a rice paddy. This site is not merely a beautiful natural landscape; it is a place where history and nature intertwine through the legends of the legendary samurai Minamoto no Yoshitsune. During the spring, a breathtaking phenomenon known as 'Mizukagami' (water mirror) occurs, where the cherry blossoms are perfectly reflected in the surrounding water-filled rice paddies, creating a mesmerizing view that captivates all who visit.
The tree is deeply connected to the legend of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a famous figure in Japanese history. According to local lore, the name 'Komatsunagi' (meaning to tie or tether a horse) originates from the time Yoshitsune passed through this area and tethered his horse here. This historical narrative makes the tree more than just a botanical specimen; it is a cherished cultural heritage and a symbol of the local history that has been protected by the community for centuries.
The greatest spectacle is the sight of this massive, solitary tree standing grandly by the rice fields. As the paths near the rice paddies may be unpaved or slightly muddy, wearing comfortable walking shoes is advisable.
