Komanji Temple is a historic Buddhist temple located in Kaho City, Akita Prefecture. It is renowned as a place where the great haiku poet Matsuo Basho, during his journey in 'The Narrow Road to the Deep North' (Oku no Hosomichi), highly praised the breathtaking scenery of Kisakata. Basho compared the beauty of this landscape to the legendary Chinese beauty Xi Shi. This cultural connection has even led to a sister-city relationship between the region and Zhejiang Province, China, the home of Xi Shi. Furthermore, the famous novelist Ryotaro Shiba also touched upon its historical significance in his works, making it a profound destination for travelers interested in Japanese literature and history.
The history of this temple is deeply intertwined with literary episodes. In 1689, when Matsuo Basho visited this area, he left a poem praising the scenery of the Tsukuda Islands (the area around modern-s Kisakata) and referencing the legend of Xi Shi. The temple's significance is also noted in Ryotaro Shiba's 'Kaido o Yuku' series, which explores the origins and history of the temple.
