Located in Semboku City, Akita Prefecture, Mount Komagatake is a magnificent volcano with its highest peak, Ogatake, reaching an elevation of 1,637m. The climbing season officially begins with the 'Yama-biraki' (mountain opening) on June 1st, spanning through summer and autumn. The mountain is characterized by its striking volcanic topography and the vibrant display of alpine plants. Along the trails, you can discover serene spots like Amida Pond and various geological formations related to volcanic activity, allowing you to feel the true dynamism of nature.
Legend has it that the eruption of Mount Komagatake in the year 807 led to the creation of Lake Tazawa. Historically, the mountain was known as 'Komagata-yama,' and the summit was home to the worship of the Komagata deity. This deity was revered both to appease volcanic activity and as a god of agriculture. Evidence of this deep-rooted spiritual history remains in the stone shrines found at the summit. Furthermore, historical records from the Edo period mention 'Shugendo' (ascetic mountain worship), marking this area as a significant site for mountain faith.
The charm of Mount Komagatake lies in its diverse climbing routes and volcanic landscapes. A key landmark is Amida Pond, which features a mountain hut near its shores. Other notable points include the peaks of Ogatake and Otake, and numerous spots where you can observe the unique terrain shaped by volcanic activity. As you hike, you will encounter areas filled with blooming alpine plants, offering a different natural visage depending on the season.
The primary climbing season is from June to September. Immediately following the June 1st mountain opening, you can enjoy fresh greenery and the first blooms of alpine flora. While summer temperatures are pleasant for hiking, mountain weather is highly unpredictable, so please prepare for sudden changes. In autumn, the landscape transforms with beautiful fall foliage. It is generally recommended to start your ascent during the bright daylight hours to ensure a safe and comfortable schedule.
This is a destination for serious mountaineering. The western 'Shinmichi' course offers routes passing through Amida Pond and branches toward the Ogatake and Otake peaks. The eastern 'Yakimori' course leads through Yokodake toward the Kunimi Onsen area. Additionally, there is a ridge-walking course between Mount Komagatake and Mount Nyuto, which requires advanced mountaineering skills. Through these treks, you can fully experience the raw beauty created by volcanic forces.
The area surrounding Mount Komagatake is blessed with a rich hot spring culture. Common routes for hikers include visiting Kunimi Onsen, Nyuto Onsenkyo, or Kuroyu Onsen as a way to end a trek or as a transit point. Visiting these hot spring villages after a long hike is a popular way to relax. Nearby, famous tourist spots like Lake Tazawa are also easily accessible.
For a safe climb, professional hiking boots, rainwear, warm clothing, and sufficient water/snacks are essential. As there is information regarding bear spray availability in the area, being prepared for wildlife is important. Please note that during certain periods, private car restrictions are implemented to protect the environment; during these times, you must use the climbing bus departing from 'Alpa Komakusa.' Always follow mountain etiquette: carry out all your trash and stay strictly on the designated trails.
