Overview & Charm

Komadome Wetland is a high-altitude bog located at an altitude of 1,100m, spanning the towns of Showa and Minamiaizu in Fukushima Prefecture. Designated as a National Natural Monument, its high academic value has also earned it a place in the 'Fukushima Green Scenery 100' selection. The wetland consists of three distinct areas—Oyachi, Shirakabadani, and Mizunadani—characterized by a vast landscape of beech forests. Although the environment is harsh, with snow depths reaching 3 to 4 meters in winter, this creates a remarkably rich and vibrant display of seasonal plant life.

History & Cultural Background

On December 28, 1970, the wetland was designated as a National Natural Monument due to its unique plant communities. The transition from low-altitude to high-altitude wetland vegetation is highly regarded by scientists. This unique ecosystem has been preserved over many years within the specialized environment of the 1,100m altitude beech forest zone.

Main Highlights

The wetland presents a completely different face depending on when you visit. Key botanical highlights include Skunk Cabbage and Marsh Marigold in spring; Eriophorum (Cottongrass) and Nikko-kisuge in summer; and the stunning autumn colors of the beech forests and grasses. In autumn, a 360-degree panorama of vibrant foliage unfolds, with beech, maple, and Japanese sumac adding brilliant colors to the landscape. You can also observe the unique shapes of fruits from plants like Aleutian avens during certain periods.

The changing colors of the plants are the greatest attraction:

• *Spring**: Starting with the melting snow and fresh green beech leaves, the wetland is adorned with Skunk Cabbage, Creeping Bellflower, and Marsh Marigold.
• *Summer**: The landscape looks like a white carpet of Eriophorum (Cottongrass), accompanied by blooming Iris and Nikko-kisuge.
• *Autumn**: The beech forests and maples turn brilliant colors alongside the fruiting of Aleutian avens. The 'kusamomiji' (autumn grass colors) is a signature feature of this season.
• *Time of Day**: As this is a natural park, walking during bright daylight hours is highly recommended.

You can enjoy botanical observation while walking along well-maintained wooden paths (boardwalks). The 'Bunakko Yudo' path near the Oyachi area allows you to observe the intricate shapes of nature up close. For a deeper experience, certified guides are available (requires reservation, starting from 5,000 JPY per group).

Surrounding Area

Various nature-rich spots are located near the wetland. Komadome Pass, located about 2km south, is a great spot to understand the local geography. Other nearby areas include Miyakoshi Wetland and the Hosoi Family Museum, which offers a glimpse into local history.
