The Imperial Palace has been the residence of successive Emperors since the Meiji era. Located in the heart of Tokyo, the vast grounds feature majestic palaces, government buildings, and historic moats and stone walls. Unlike the general public areas like the East Garden, the Special Tour is an exclusive program that requires advanced reservations. Through this tour, you can experience the historical background, dignified architecture, and lush natural landscapes that symbolize Japan up close.
The site of the Imperial Palace occupies the main part of the former Edo Castle, which was developed by Tokugawa Ieyasu around the 17th century. From the early 17th century until the Meiji era in 1868, it served as the political and residential center for the Tokugawa Shogunate. Today, the traces of the Edo period—such as the moats, earthen walls, stone ramparts, and gates—remain as significant cultural heritage sites that tell the story of Japan's historical evolution.
The Special Tour follows a route through historical architecture and gardens. Key highlights include the palace area, the East Garden of the Palace, and various historic structures. Notable sites include the Fujimi Yagura and Fushimi Yagura towers, the former Privy Council building, and the Imperial Household Agency buildings, all set within a beautiful landscape. The scenic waterfronts, such as the Lotus Pond, and the ancient stone walls and gates offer a unique glimpse into traditional Japanese castle architecture and aesthetic sensibilities.
The appearance of the Imperial Palace changes with the seasons. May, July, and August are particularly beautiful when the greenery is lush and seasonal plants are in bloom. However, please note that the tour route is approximately 2.2 km long and includes areas with little shade. It is important to prepare according to the weather. Tours are typically organized into morning and afternoon sessions, so consider the temperature of the time of day you choose.

As you walk the 2.2 km course, you will observe the surrounding palace buildings, stone walls, and moats. Because the number of participants is strictly limited through a reservation system (online, mail, or at the window), you can enjoy a calm and respectful atmosphere while experiencing Japan's traditional spaces.
The area around the Imperial Palace is highly accessible, with major Tokyo stations and commercial facilities nearby. You can reach the area via the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line (Nijubashimae Station), the Mita Line (Otemachi Station), or the JR lines (Tokyo Station). While there are parking lots in the vicinity of the Imperial Palace Outer Garden, public transportation is highly recommended as vehicle access to the inner palace grounds is restricted.
Strict rules apply to your visit. First, you MUST present an original form of identification (driver's license, My Number card, student ID, etc.) at the reception. Copies are not accepted. As the 2.2 km route involves walking in areas with minimal shade, please wear comfortable shoes and prepare for heat/sun protection. Security checks for baggage are conducted, so please keep your belongings to a minimum. Minors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Please use public transportation as parking is not available inside the palace grounds.
