The Former JNR Kurayoshi Line was a national railway route that once connected Kurayoshi Station in Tottori Prefecture to Yamamori Station in Sekigane, covering approximately 20 kilometers. The line was officially closed at the end of March 1985. Even more than 40 years after its decommissioning, certain sections still preserve the original rails and platform structures, making it a rare and highly regarded site for railway enthusiasts. The area around the former Taikuji Station is particularly famous, where the railway relics are beautifully integrated into the surrounding bamboo groves, creating a hauntingly beautiful and mystical atmosphere.
This railway line once served as a vital transportation artery for the local community. Near the former Taikuji Station, you can see the station platforms and tracks up close. Another notable area is near the Yamamori Tunnel, where the landscape shows how the abandoned line has become one with the local topography and vegetation. Please note that access to the interior of the Yamamori Tunnel is restricted and is only accessible through specific guided tours or organized events.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. In spring, the surrounding cherry blossoms create a picturesque backdrop. From summer to autumn, the lush green bamboo groves provide a refreshing environment for walking. However, please be aware that during the winter season (December to February), the tourist information center near the Taikuji Station area may be closed, and access to certain sections may be restricted due to snow or icy conditions.
The 'Sekigane Abandoned Line Tourist Information Center' is located near the site, offering railway dioramas and photo exhibitions of the abandoned tracks. You can also find original local goods, snacks, and beverages for sale. For those wishing to explore a wider area, rental bicycles are available, allowing for more efficient sightseeing than walking alone. Additionally, the area hosts special events such as the 'Former JNR Kurayoshi Line Trekking Tour' and 'Walking Open Days,' where you can explore the tunnel interiors with a professional guide.
The area around the abandoned tracks features the historic Kurayoshi Shirakabe Storehouse district, known for its beautiful traditional architecture. The nearby Sekigane Onsen area also allows visitors to experience local culture alongside the history of the railway. The tourist information center is located about a 15-minute walk from the Taikuji Station site, serving as an excellent base for your exploration.
Comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes are highly recommended for exploring the trails. As you will be walking through natural environments, please prepare for changing weather and temperatures. At the information center, it is wise to check whether they accept credit cards or transportation IC cards in addition to cash. If you plan to join a tour to enter the tunnels, advanced reservations are required. To protect the environment, please carry your trash back with you and respect the local nature and signage.
