National Showa Alps Azumino Park (Horigane/Hotaka District) is a vast national park located at the foot of the Northern Alps in Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture. The park is divided into the Rural Culture Zone and the Satoyama Culture Zone, with facilities designed to harmonize perfectly with the natural environment. Visitors can enjoy a variety of seasonal events and exhibitions that showcase the local culture.
This area is deeply rooted in the rich natural environment of Azumino and the long-standing traditions of Japanese rural life (Satoyama). The park preserves scenic elements such as watermills and terraced rice fields, and features themed exhibition halls that convey the history and essence of traditional Japanese farming culture to modern visitors.
The park features diverse facilities spread across multiple zones. Near the central entrance, you will find a guide center, restaurants, and themed exhibition halls where you can gather local information. Other notable spots include the terraced flower gardens, the Kofun Forest, the Stream Plaza, and the Karasugawa Suspension Bridge, all of which utilize the natural topography to create breathtaking views. Depending on the season, you might encounter unique events, such as a market featuring frog-themed goods or festivals utilizing local seasonal ingredients.
Opening hours vary by season. During Spring (March–June) and Autumn (September–October), the park closes at 17:00. In Summer (July–August), it stays open until 18:00, allowing for longer evening strolls. In Winter (November–February), it closes at 16:00. Visiting during the summer is particularly enjoyable as the extended hours allow you to enjoy the scenery from bright daylight through to the evening. It is also a great idea to time your visit with specific seasonal events, such as those related to local trout.
There are many programs designed to help visitors connect with local culture and nature. For instance, you can participate in a traditional Soba (buckwheat noodle) making experience (advance reservation required), enjoy seasonal markets, or dine at restaurants serving dishes made with local ingredients. These activities offer a deeper understanding of the local food culture and lifestyle beyond simple sightseeing.
In addition to the Horigane/Hotaka district, the park also includes the Omachi/Matsukawa district. If you visit both areas on the same day, a single admission fee covers both districts. The surrounding Azumino area is an excellent base for driving tours and exploring the natural beauty of Nagano.
As the park covers a large area, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and appropriate clothing. Regarding payments, cash and credit cards are accepted at the onsite restaurants and certain service points. Please note that smoking is prohibited within the paid areas of the park to prevent secondhand smoke.
