Koiwai Farm, located in Shizukuishi Town, Iwate Prefecture, is a historic large-scale farm founded in 1891 (Meiji 24). Spanning approximately 3,000 hectares, the farm manages diverse operations including dairy farming, forestry, environmental greening, tourism, and food production. With over 130 years of history, it embodies the theme of 'coexistence between humans and the environment,' having transformed wild-lands into lush green pastures. It stands as a symbol of the development of modern Japanese agriculture.
The farm preserves numerous structures built between the Meiji and early Showa eras, many of which are designated as National Important Cultural Properties. This includes 21 specific facilities such as the main office, the first and second warehouses, the equestrian stable, the club, and several barns and silos (No. 1 to No. 4). These buildings are invaluable for understanding Japan's modern architectural and agricultural history. Furthermore, the 'Oinomori' forest within the farm is a site of literary significance, appearing in the works of the famous poet Kenji Miyazawa, and is designated as a national scenic spot. Thus, Koiwai Farm is not just a tourist destination but a living historical record of the technology and culture that supported Japan's modernization.
The farm offers a variety of spots where historical architecture meets natural beauty. The architectural group, including the warehouses and main office, serves as a precious relic of past construction techniques. Visitors can also see the Edohigan Single Cherry Tree, which changes its expression with every season; this tree was historically planted to protect cattle from the sun. The vast landscape allows you to feel the rich natural environment of Iwate Prefecture up close.
Koiwai Farm offers different charms depending on the season. From spring to summer, the lush green pastures are perfect for outdoor activities. The blooming of the Edohigan cherry blossoms and the refreshing summer scenery are particularly popular for photography. In autumn, the landscape shifts with the changing colors, and in winter, you can witness the serene, snow-covered farm. The farm is generally open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and visiting during daylight hours is recommended to fully appreciate the details of the historic buildings and the vast scenery.

Because the farm is vast and contains unpaved paths and natural terrain, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please prepare clothing suitable for the season and changing weather.
