Koiwa Shobuen is a lush, stroll-style garden located along the banks of the Edogawa River in Edogawa Ward, Tokyo. This beautiful landscape was developed by the Edogawa Ward administration, rooted in the history of Japanese irises donated by local residents. The vast iris field, spanning approximately 4,900 square meters, comes alive between May and June, when roughly 50,000 irises bloom in spectacular fashion. Known as an 'urban oasis,' the sight of these multicolored flowers provides a mesmerizing escape from the surrounding metropolitan bustle.
The origins of this garden are deeply connected to the affection of the local community. The current landscape was shaped by the foundation of Japanese irises donated by local citizens, who have cherished and nurtured this tradition. This history of community-driven cultivation has helped preserve the rich natural environment seen today. More than just a public park, it serves as a symbolic spot for Edogawa Ward, where local community spirit and nature exist in perfect harmony.

The greatest draw is undoubtedly the 50,000 irises that bloom simultaneously in early summer. The riverbank is painted with a diverse palette of purple, white, and pink flowers, creating a stunning visual experience. Additionally, various wild grasses grow around the iris fields, allowing visitors to enjoy the changing expressions of nature throughout the season. Walking through the expansive grounds to observe the flowers swaying in the wind is a quintessential experience of this location.
The best time to visit Koiwa Shobuen is from May to June. This period marks the peak of the iris blooming season, offering the most colorful and breathtaking scenery of the year. Specifically, from early to mid-June, the 'Koiwa Shobuen Festival' is held, bringing a lively and festive atmosphere to the garden. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during daylight hours to fully appreciate the vivid colors and brilliance of the flowers.

The garden is designed as a stroll-style garden, offering a peaceful way to observe seasonal plants while walking through nature. Wandering through the vast iris fields allows for a refreshing mental reset away from daily life. During the June festival period, you may also encounter local events that celebrate regional culture and nature, providing a deeper connection to the local environment.
Since the garden is situated along the Edogawa riverbank, the surrounding area is characterized by wide, open spaces. After your stroll, you can enjoy dining or relaxing in the nearby areas. It is a peaceful district where time seems to move more slowly, making it ideal for a relaxing afternoon.
As the garden is a natural environment, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Depending on the season, temperatures can rise, so it is wise to bring a hat and plenty of water to prevent heatstroke.
