Overview and Charm

Kogenji is a temple of the Rinzai school (Chufuko sect) located in Tanba City, Hyogo Prefecture. Known by its mountain name Zuigan-zan, its principal deity is Shakyamuni Buddha. The temple is most famous for its stunning 'Tenmoku Kaede' maple leaves, making it one of the 'Tanba Three Great Maple Temples' alongside Entsu-ji and Sekigan-ji. Within its quiet grounds, visitors can experience a landscape that shifts beautifully with every season, deeply rooted in the spirit of Zen.

History and Cultural Background

The temple was founded in 1325 by the monk Enkei Soyu. Because Enkei Soyu studied at Mt. Tenmoku in China, Kogenji came to be known as the 'West Tenmoku' in comparison to Kaifu's Soun-ji (East Tenmoku). The temple later received the name 'Kogenji' from Emperor Go-Daigo. Although it suffered destruction during the Sengoku period, it was restored during the early Edo period. It remains a prestigious site that preserves numerous cultural assets and items once bestowed by the Imperial Court.

Main Highlights

The temple grounds feature several structures that evoke a deep sense of history. Key structures include the 'Butsuden' (Buddha Hall/Ho-o Hall), the 'Hojo' rebuilt by Koan Genkei, and the 'Tahoto' pagoda, which resembles a three-story structure but houses sacred sutras inside. Additionally, the ceiling of the 'Shiho-ro' gate features exquisite historical paintings. These architectural elements serve as vital symbols of the temple's long-standing cultural heritage.

Seasonal Recommendations

The defining characteristic of Kogenji is its seasonal transformation. The autumn foliage season, when the Tenmoku Kaede maples turn vibrant colors, attracts many visitors. Spring also offers beautiful cherry blossoms. We recommend visiting during bright daylight hours to fully appreciate the intricate details of the gardens and architecture, or in the late afternoon to feel the profound, quiet atmosphere of Zen.
