Koganezaki is a scenic cape located in Nishiizu Town, Shizuoka Prefecture, facing Suruga Bay. Its most striking feature is the rock face that glows with a brilliant golden hue when bathed in the setting sun. This unique coloration is caused by the presence of 'Propylite,' a geological formation created by the interaction of volcanic materials and hydrothermal activity, which is designated as a natural monument of Shizuoka Prefecture. Furthermore, Koganezaki is renowned as a premier location in West Izu where visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view of Mount Fuji rising directly above the sea.
The geological formation of this area is the result of intense volcanic and hydrothermal activity. On March 18, 1988, the 'Propylite of Koganezaki' was officially designated as a natural monument by Shizuoka Prefecture due to its significant academic and aesthetic value. Historically, the stone quarried from this area was even used in the construction of Sunpu Castle. The area also holds literary significance, with a monument dedicated to the famous author Yukio Mishima located near the cape, where nature and literature intersect.
Koganezaki offers a diverse range of natural landscapes. During sunset, the cliffs transform into a shimmering golden spectacle, creating a mystical atmosphere alongside the sea. Visitors can also spot unique rock formations, such as a rock that resembles a horse's head. The area is well-developed as 'Koganezaki Park,' featuring walking paths, grassy areas, and observation decks. To the north, the Koganezaki Beach offers a 100-meter stretch of sandy shore with exceptionally clear water, perfect for exploring the shoreline.
The most magical time to visit is during the late afternoon. The moment the sun begins to set and the cliffs glow intensely is the quintessential Koganezaki experience. During the summer months (July to August), the area becomes a popular destination for swimming and snorkeling. While the park is open year-round, visiting during the summer season allows you to enjoy the lively atmosphere of the beach and the incredible clarity of the ocean.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll along the park's walking paths to observe the dramatic contrast between the steep cliffs and the ocean. At the beach, you can enjoy water activities in the transparent sea or explore the rocky shore. From the observation decks, you can enjoy a panoramic view that encompasses Mount Fuji, the Izu Islands, and the vast expanse of Suruga Bay.
The area around Koganezaki is a beautiful part of the West Izu coastline, perfect for scenic drives. Nishiizu Town is dotted with other beautiful coastlines, hot spring facilities, and natural landmarks. There are also various accommodations and restaurants along the coast where you can stay and enjoy the ocean views.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for exploring the paths and observation decks. If you plan to swim, please bring swimwear and sandals. Regarding payments, we recommend carrying cash, as it may be required for local facilities or parking. While English signage is limited, please respect the natural environment by not touching the natural monuments or leaving any litter behind.
