Koganzaki Furofushi Onsen is a unique, single-owner hot spring facility located along the coastline of Fukaura Town, Nishitsugaru District, Aomori Prefecture. Its greatest attraction is the reddish-brown open-air bath, designed to feel as if it is part of the shoreline itself, sitting right at the edge of the Sea of Japan. The unique color of the water, caused by the oxidation of iron-rich minerals, creates a stunning contrast with the vast blue of the sea. The area is also a scenic spot located at the foot of the Shirakami-Sanchi World Natural Heritage site, making it a place where visitors can feel the powerful energy of nature up close.
The history of this area involves a long-standing presence of natural hot springs along the coast. In 1970, following a deep-sea drilling investigation 200 meters underground, the hot spring was successfully tapped, leading to the current facility. Since then, it has developed into a popular destination for hot spring enthusiasts. Today, as a single-owner inn situated right on the coast, it preserves the local culture of enjoying both the healing waters and the abundant bounty of the sea.
The most notable feature is the open-air bath set upon the coastal rocks. The facility includes a gourd-shaped mixed-gender bath and an oval-shaped women-only bath, both of which allow guests to enjoy the dynamic scenery of the Sea of Japan. Watching the sun sink below the horizon is a once-in-a-lifetime experience unique to this location. Additionally, the large indoor baths offer a panoramic view of the sea from an elevated position, allowing you to witness the changing expressions of the ocean depending on the season and time of day.
Bathing is available from sunrise to sunset. The most highly recommended time is during sunset. Watching the sky turn a deep orange as it melts into the sea while soaking in the water is the quintessential Furofushi Onsen experience. Throughout the seasons, you can enjoy the different moods of the Sea of Japan, from the powerful waves of winter to the calmer waters of summer. While summer is relatively pleasant, be prepared for the very strong waves characteristic of the Sea of Japan during the winter months.
Beyond just bathing, you can experience a deep connection with nature. By soaking in the iron-rich, dark reddish-brown waters while listening to the sound of the waves, you can directly feel the energy of the earth. For guests staying overnight, the inn provides a culinary experience featuring fresh seafood caught in the nearby Maehama fishing grounds.
