The Kofun of Mt. Koba is a keyhole-shaped burial mound (zenpokoen-fun) located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. Believed to have been constructed between the 3rd and 4th centuries, it serves as a significant archaeological site representing the ancient history of this region. Due to its elevated position, the site offers an exceptional vantage point to observe the surrounding topography and the sprawling cityscape of Matsumoto. The area is particularly renowned as a premier cherry blossom destination during the spring, as approximately 2,000 Yoshino and Yaezakura cherry trees bloom beautifully across the mound.
This burial mound is a classic example of a keyhole-shaped mound, a design characteristic of the Kofun period (3rd to 4th century). Since there are no direct facilities for food or drinks immediately adjacent to the site, please bring your own beverages and snacks. Note that English signage may be limited. To preserve the historical integrity of the site, please follow local etiquette, such as taking your trash home with you and being careful not to disturb the vegetation or the ancient structures.
