Kofu Castle (Maizuru Castle Park) is a historic castle site located in the heart of Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture. Today, it is a beautiful urban park beloved by locals and tourists alike. Although many structures were dismantled after the Meiji era, the stone walls, gates, and turrets have been carefully preserved, maintaining the atmosphere of the era when the Takeda clan once ruled. The park serves as a peaceful retreat where historical architecture blends seamlessly with lush nature, offering different charms throughout the seasons. The sight of cherry blossoms surrounding the stone walls in spring is particularly iconic.
The history of Kofu Castle traces back to its construction by order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi following the fall of the Takeda clan. During the Meiji era, the site underwent significant changes; as its function as a fortress diminished, parts of the inner castle were used as industrial testing grounds and even a wine brewery. While the scale of the castle was reduced due to railway construction and the relocation of the prefectural office, its spirit remains intact. In 1904, it was opened to the public as 'Maizuru Park' and has since become a cultural hub, hosting facilities like the Butokuden and the Onshi Memorial Hall.
The park is dotted with precious relics that showcase advanced ancient engineering. A standout feature is the 'line engravings' on the stone walls. These carvings of birds and fish are believed to be protective symbols meant to prevent the walls from collapsing. Another fascinating feature is the 'yaana' (arrow holes/indentations) used to split stones. Visitors can observe the technological evolution by comparing the 12cm 'Yotsunoyaana' from the original construction period with the 9cm 'Sansun-yaana' from the mid-Edo period. Additionally, the reconstructed Yamate Mon Gate and Inari Yagura Turret allow you to catch a glimpse of the castle's former grandeur.
Maizuru Castle Park offers a different experience depending on when you visit. The most highly recommended time is April, during the full bloom of the cherry blossoms. Approximately 160 trees surround the stone walls, creating a spectacular view of flowers against historical stone. For those interested in detail, visiting during bright daylight hours is best for observing the fine line engravings and the 'yaana' holes. In the evening, the park offers a calm, contemplative atmosphere, perfect for a quiet stroll while feeling the weight of history.
Visiting this park is more than just a walk; it is an exploration of history. You can actively search for the hidden bird and fish patterns in the stone walls or compare the different sizes of the 'yaana' holes to understand how ancient people processed stone. Since the park is within walking distance from Kofu Station, it is also a perfect stop during a city cycling tour or a walking tour of the local area.
Located in central Kofu, the park is surrounded by many spots for dining and sightseeing. Within walking or cycling distance from Kofu Station, you will find numerous restaurants serving local specialties like Houtou noodles and shops selling Yamanashi's famous Koshu wine, making it easy to enjoy a delicious meal after your historical exploration.
To protect the historical site, please do not touch the stone walls or the delicate engravings. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes suitable for park paths. If you are using a bus or require parking for a large vehicle/wheelchair, please check for reservations in advance. It is also helpful to carry small change or 1,000 yen notes for any local expenses. While photography is permitted, please be respectful of the ruins and avoid any physical contact with the structures.
