Koenji Awa Odori is a representative summer festival held in the Koenji area of Suginami, Tokyo. The event takes place over two days—the final Saturday and Sunday of August—transforming the shopping streets around Koenji and Shin-Koenji Stations, as well as Konan-dori, into a massive stage. It is renowned for its scale, second only to the famous Awa Odori in Tokushima Prefecture. The sight of countless dancers parading through the streets is truly breathtaking. As a staple of late summer in Tokyo, the festival has gained immense popularity, even attracting dance troupes from Tokushima itself, creating a highly energetic and festive atmosphere.
The origins of this festival date back to 1957, when it began as the "Koenji Baka Odori," a local community revitalization project. Over time, under the guidance of experts from Tokushima, it evolved into the current "Awa Odori" style. In 1963, it was officially renamed the "Tokyo Koenji Awa Odori." As the festival grew in both scale and quality, it became a vital cultural event managed by the NPO Tokyo Koenji Awa Odori Promotion Association, ensuring that local traditions and vitality are passed down to future generations.
The biggest highlight is the "Nagashi Odori" (street dance), where dance troupes known as "Ren" parade through various performance areas. Multiple stages are set up around Koenji and Shin-Koenji Stations, including the Chuo, Higashi, Junjo, Pal, Momozono, Minami, and Look 1st/2nd stages. Additionally, "Butai Odori" (stage dance) performances are held at facilities such as Cession Suginami and Za-Koenji. The dynamic movements of the dancers, dressed in colorful, traditional costumes and accompanied by the powerful sounds of traditional music, will instantly captivate any spectator.
The festival is held on the last Saturday and Sunday of August. For a more artistic experience, we recommend watching the "Butai Odori" (stage dances) held from the morning through the afternoon. For those seeking the full-throttle energy and unity of the crowd, the "Nagashi Odori" (street dances) held from evening through night is a must. The night performances, illuminated by lights, are particularly beautiful and represent the climax of the festival.
As a spectator, you can enjoy the performances freely throughout the streets. Rather than just sitting in a fixed seat, the true joy of this festival is walking through the shopping districts and following the various "Ren" troupes as they pass by. You can even experience the festival atmosphere at the station, where the departure melodies at Koenji Station are uniquely arranged with Awa Odori musical elements.
The main venues are the shopping streets surrounding Koenji and Shin-Koenji Stations. The area is lined with many restaurants and shops, allowing you to enjoy food and drinks while soaking in the festive heat. Cultural facilities like Cession Suginami and Za-Koenji also play crucial roles as stage venues.
Due to extreme crowds during the festival, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable clothing and walking shoes. Carrying a small bag for drinks and snacks is also helpful. Please be considerate of local residents and use public facilities with care.
