The Otake Kofun Cluster is a significant historical site located in Mashiko Town, Tochigi Prefecture. It consists of 35 ancient burial mounds, 17 of which are officially registered as cultural properties of Tochigi Prefecture. The greatest appeal of this site is the seamless fusion of ancient historical landscapes with the ever-changing beauty of nature. Most notably during spring, the hills are transformed into a vibrant tapestry of bright yellow rapeseed flowers and approximately 20 different varieties of cherry blossoms, welcoming visitors with an overwhelming display of color.
The Otake Kofun Cluster serves as an important cultural asset that tells the story of the region's past. The 17 designated burial mounds are precious archaeological remains that provide insight into the lives and culture of ancient people in this area. Beyond its historical value, the site is carefully preserved as part of the local natural landscape, creating a scenery where history and nature coexist. The most spectacular sight is the harmonious coexistence of cherry blossoms and rapeseed flowers in spring. Various species, including Somei Yoshino, Higan cherry, and mountain cherries, bloom in succession above a vast expanse of yellow rapeseed flowers. Additionally, the nearby Kameoka Hachiman Shrine features historical architecture, including a main hall and a purification fountain (chozuya) adorned with stone turtle statues, allowing visitors to enjoy a landscape where historical structures and nature intertwine. Walking through the mounds, you can truly feel the breath of antiquity.
The most recommended time to visit the Otake Kofun Cluster is from late March to mid-April. During this window, both the cherry blossoms and rapeseed flowers reach full bloom simultaneously, offering the most magnificent view. The period from early to mid-April is particularly ideal for photography. During certain seasonal events, you may also experience special activities such as food trucks or traditional tea ceremonies hosted by local tea appreciation groups. For a peaceful stroll, visiting during daylight hours on a clear day will provide the most vivid and beautiful views of the landscape.
Visitors can engage in more than just sightseeing; it is a place to observe nature and touch local culture. During spring events, there are often collaborations with local high schools or cultural demonstrations such as tea ceremonies. Depending on the season, a dog run may also be set up, allowing for a relaxing time in a natural setting. It is a wonderful place to learn about historical backgrounds while appreciating the seasonal flora in a calm, serene environment.
The area surrounding the Otake Kofun Cluster is dotted with spots where you can experience the rich nature and culture of Mashiko Town.
