Mt. Kochi Observatory is a premier lookout point located in the southern area of Amami Oshima, Kagoshima Prefecture, offering a commanding view of the Oshima Strait. Situated at a high elevation, the site is characterized by its wide-open, unobstructed panoramic vistas. On a clear day, visitors can witness the deep blue of the Oshima Strait alongside the silhouettes of Kakeromajima Island and even the distant Tokunoshima Island. Surrounded by lush, untouched nature, this is a place where you can truly immerse yourself in the serenity of the ocean and escape the bustle of daily life.
The area surrounding Mt. Kochi has long been recognized as a symbol of the natural environment of Amami Oshima. The observatory itself has been a beloved spot for locals and travelers to appreciate the magnificent landscape of the Oshima Strait. The region maintains a deeply rooted natural ecosystem, where the original topography and scenic beauty remain preserved in their natural state. This environment forms a vital part of the rich biodiversity found throughout the Amami Islands.

The greatest draw is the dynamic and powerful scenery of the Oshima Strait. From the observatory, you can enjoy the endless horizon and the shifting colors of the blue sea. The way the ocean changes based on the weather and the time of day—from vibrant turquoise to deep indigo—provides a different impression every time you visit. The exceptional clarity of the air allows for a vast field of vision where distant islands appear clearly, creating a sense of immense scale.
Mt. Kochi Observatory can be visited throughout the year, but it is most spectacular during periods of high visibility and clear skies. The bright daylight hours are ideal for seeing the most vivid blues of the ocean. Additionally, visiting during twilight offers a magical experience, as the sky and sea blend into a beautiful gradient of colors. The changing light throughout the seasons brings out different facets of the landscape, making every visit unique.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll through the surrounding natural environment. To reach the observatory from the parking area, you will walk along a maintained forest path. This trail allows you to experience the sounds and scents of the forest, providing a sensory connection to nature. Once you reach the top, you can spend a peaceful moment soaking in the view. The location is also a highly recommended spot for photography enthusiasts looking to capture the dramatic coastal scenery.
The area around Mt. Kochi Observatory is dotted with several spots to enjoy the natural beauty of Amami Oshima. Nearby attractions include the refreshing "Shinohi Falls" and the historical sites of the "Former Army Ammunition Depot." The area also serves as part of a beautiful coastal driving route, allowing you to explore the charm of southern Amami Oshima alongside its unique coastal landscapes and island views.
The path from the parking lot to the observatory features some elevation changes and stairs.
