Located in the lush greenery of Konan City, Kochi, the Kochi Prefectural Noichi Zoo is a unique wildlife park designed to let animals live in environments that closely mimic their natural habitats. The zoo prioritizes a naturalistic approach, minimizing the use of visible cages or heavy fences, which allows visitors to observe the animals' natural behaviors and expressions more intimately. The vast grounds, integrated seamlessly with the surrounding forest, make it an ideal destination for family picnics or a peaceful stroll for adults looking to enjoy the changing seasons.
The park is operated with a deep respect for the natural environment of Kochi Prefecture. Rather than just displaying animals, the zoo focuses on maintaining habitats that respect the animals' ecology and natural instincts. Visitors can experience the richness of Kochi's nature through the seasonal melodies of wild birds and the vibrant colors of local flora, making it a beloved landmark that symbolizes the region's natural heritage.
The zoo features various exhibition areas that recreate diverse ecosystems. For instance, in the expansive savanna-style area, you can observe giraffes and zebras relaxing from elevated viewing decks. You can also encounter a wide variety of species, such as red pandas, otters, and impressive penguin exhibits. Additionally, one of the most notable features is the large-scale tropical rainforest hall, where you can observe birds, mammals, and reptiles while feeling the atmosphere of Central or Southeast Asia—a truly educational and immersive experience.
The park offers beautiful scenery throughout the year. Spring and autumn are particularly wonderful, as the seasonal flowers and bird songs create a perfect atmosphere for walking. To see the animals most active, we recommend visiting in the early morning or during the 'Enjoyment Time' (special feeding sessions led by keepers). Please note that animals typically head back to their enclosures around 16:10, so an early visit is recommended for the best viewing.
Beyond simple observation, visitors can enjoy nature walks throughout the park. A highlight is the 'Enjoyment Time,' where keepers provide commentary and demonstrate feeding behaviors, offering a deeper understanding of animal ecology. For families with children, the prairie dog exhibit—where you can look into their habitat through an underground tunnel—is a highly popular and engaging way to get close to the animals.
The park is surrounded by the breathtaking natural landscapes characteristic of Kochi. It is easily accessible via the Kochi Expressway (Nankoku IC) and is only about a 10-minute drive from Kochi Ryoma Airport. With various local sightseeing spots and commercial facilities nearby, it serves as a convenient stop during your Kochi travels.
As the park is quite large and set within a natural environment, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable clothing and walking shoes. While you are free to bring your own food and drinks, please refrain from eating inside the buildings. To ensure a pleasant experience for everyone, feeding the animals, using drones, or making loud noises is strictly prohibited. For families, strollers and wheelchairs are available for rent (fees apply). Please follow the rules to ensure the safety and well-being of the animals.
