Kobu Sugi is a legendary natural monument located in Kamikoani Village, Akita Prefecture. It is a natural Akita Sugi (Japanese Cedar) characterized by a massive, extraordinary burl on its trunk. This unique feature reaches a circumference of up to 6.6 meters. The surrounding area is filled with towering cedars exceeding 40 meters in height, creating a breathtaking landscape of natural architectural beauty. Managed as a natural observation forest and mountain village plaza, the site features well-maintained walking paths that allow visitors to observe the history and majestic form of the ancient Sugi trees up close.
The natural Akita Sugi forest in this area has a rich history. In 1924, it was designated as a natural forest harvesting test site to study the structure and growth of the trees. Since 1988, it has been designated as a Natural Observation and Education Forest to preserve the beauty of the forest and serve as an educational site for forest environments. The cultural significance of the local Akita Sugi is profound; specimens have been used in displays at the National Museum of Nature and Science, and timber from this region has even been utilized in the construction of the Kyoto Imperial Palace Guest House, linking these trees to Japan's architectural heritage.
The main attraction is, of course, the 'Kobu' (burl) that gives the tree its name. The tree features an extraordinary scale, with a trunk diameter of 1.20m, a maximum burl width of 2.2m, and a circumference of 3.8m (expanding to 6.6m at the burl section). The forest also contains incredibly tall cedars reaching 56 meters in height, creating a dense, awe-inspiring canopy. The site is well-equipped with signage, gazebos, and benches, providing a comfortable environment to observe the intricate details of natural formations.
While the natural beauty of the forest can be enjoyed year-round, the scenery shifts beautifully with the seasons. From spring to summer, the lush, vibrant green foliage of the Sugi trees creates a refreshing atmosphere. In autumn, the changing colors of the surrounding vegetation offer a stunning contrast to the deep greens of the cedar. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during bright daylight hours, when sunlight filters through the canopy to highlight the incredible textures and details of the massive burl.
The primary activity is 'Shinrin-yoku' (forest bathing) while walking along the maintained trails (such as the Forest Bathing Trail 3). The paths are designed for easy navigation, including sections with handrails and stairs, allowing you to explore the forest topography safely. The presence of gazebos and benches makes it an ideal spot to pause, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and enjoy a moment of quiet contemplation amidst the ancient giants.
Kobu Sugi is nestled within the rich, untouched nature of Kamikoani Village. The area is filled with educational signage that explains the history of the natural Sugi trees. After your walk, you can relax at the nearby mountain village plaza or designated rest areas to fully immerse yourself in the tranquil atmosphere of the Akita wilderness.
