Kobutsu Forest Park is a public forest park located in Higashishikuda-cho, Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, offering a rich and diverse natural environment. Established in 1978, the park was developed from land originally used as a seedling cultivation site for the Kagawa Prefectural Agricultural Experiment Station. Today, it serves as a vital community space for promoting health and increasing awareness of forestry. The park is divided into two main areas: the 'Botanical Park Area' centered around the beautiful Kobutsu Pond, and the 'Forest Area' centered around Mt. Futago. The history of this park traces back to its origins as a seedling cultivation site for agricultural research. The land, which possesses an optimal environment for plant growth, was later transformed into a park designed to promote physical and mental well-being and spread knowledge of forestry and greenery. It is recognized as one of the 'Kagawa Midori Hyakusen' (100 Selected Greenery of Kagawa) and is part of the 'Shikoku no Michi' (Shikoku Nature Trail) designated by the Ministry of the Environment. It serves not just as a recreational facility, but as a guardian of the region's natural heritage.
The most iconic feature of the park is the central Kobutsu Pond. A scenic walking path surrounds the pond, allowing visitors to enjoy peaceful strolls by the water. The Botanical Park Area features a diverse collection of gardens, including cherry blossom avenues, peony gardens, hydrangea gardens, peony gardens, rhododendron gardens, and iris gardens, each offering a different spectacle depending on the season. In the Mt. Futago area, visitors can find hiking trails and a mountain summit observatory that provides expansive views. While the park grounds are open 24 hours, it is highly recommended to visit during daylight hours for safety and to fully utilize facilities like the rest house, shops, and campsites. The park offers a wide range of activities. In the Botanical Park Area, visitors can engage in leisurely plant observation and seasonal walks. In contrast, the Mt. Futago area offers more active experiences, such as hiking through athletic courses and mountain trails, or staying overnight at the campsite.
