Kogaikawa Fureai Park (also known as Homic Fureai Park) is a scenic park located in Shimotsuma City, Ibaraki Prefecture, where rich natural beauty meets recreational facilities. The park features a massive 32,000 m² Flower Zone where colorful blooms change with the seasons. A standout feature is the 'Nature Center,' a unique building designed in the shape of the Great Purple Emperor (Oomurasaki), Japan's national butterfly. This center serves as a hub for nature study, sports, and family-friendly BBQ activities.
The park was developed as a sanctuary for local residents to enjoy the natural environment of the Kogai River. It plays a vital role in preserving the habitat of the Great Purple Emperor butterfly and serves as an educational base for teaching younger generations about local biodiversity. The architecture of the Nature Center itself, modeled after the butterfly, reflects a deep respect for the local ecosystem.
The park is divided into several zones tailored to different interests. The most striking is the Flower Zone, which transforms with the seasons—offering vibrant poppies in the spring and delicate cosmos in the autumn. Another must-see is the 360-degree panoramic observation deck at the Nature Center. From this vantage point, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Kogai River, the Tsukuba Mountains, the Nikko mountain range, and even Mount Fuji on clear days. Inside the center, visitors can explore exhibits and a mini-aquarium to learn about local aquatic life.
Each season offers a different charm. Visit around April to May to see the blooming poppies, or in October to witness the swaying cosmos fields. For the best experience, visit during bright daylight hours to fully appreciate the vivid colors of the flowers and the clarity of the panoramic views from the observation deck.
From active sports to quiet observation, there is something for everyone. The Nature Center offers educational displays and videos regarding the life cycle of the Great Purple Emperor and freshwater fish from around the world. For those seeking movement, the sports zone includes areas for soccer and softball, as well as picnic areas. If you wish to enjoy a BBQ, please note that advanced reservations at the Nature Center are required.
The area surrounding the park follows the natural flow of the Kogai River, making it a peaceful destination for driving or cycling. The park is easily accessible from the Tsukuba Mountain area, making it a perfect stop during a scenic road trip through Ibaraki.
As the park is quite large and set in a natural environment, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and walking shoes.
