The Kobe Municipal Arboretum is a specialized tree botanical garden located in Kita-ku, Kobe City, within the beautiful natural environment of the Mt. Rokko mountain range. The facility is uniquely designed to showcase approximately 1,200 species of trees from across the globe, with each species planted in an area that closely mimics its original native habitat. Situated at an altitude of about 440 meters, the garden is part of the Setonaikai National Park area, offering a pristine and refreshing atmosphere. The primary characteristic of this garden is its vast diversity of tree species, which allows visitors to observe the distinct beauty and changing characteristics of different plants throughout the seasons.
The arboretum is built upon a concept of naturalistic planting. Rather than just a collection of plants, the facility uses a method of dividing the grounds into zones that replicate the natural environments of various global regions. This approach serves as a living exhibition of the natural world through trees, playing a vital role in preserving and utilizing the local natural environment while educating the public about global biodiversity.
Visitors can explore diverse areas where trees from all over the world are displayed. Each zone is carefully curated to recreate the specific environmental conditions required for those plants to thrive, allowing for a deep observation of diverse botanical forms. The facility also includes the Forest Exhibition Hall, where visitors can learn more about plant life through various exhibits and visit the gift shop. Beyond the trees, the grounds feature spacious lawn areas and even sections for observing animals, such as the Japanese Serow (Kamoshika) and rabbits, making it a complete nature experience.
The garden offers a different visual experience depending on the season. Spring (March to May) and Autumn (October to November) are particularly notable times when the changes in foliage and seasonal transitions are most striking. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during daylight hours between 9:00 and 17:00 (last entry at 16:30). Visiting during these bright hours allows you to clearly observe the intricate details and vibrant colors of the various tree species.
At the arboretum, you can engage in deep observation of trees and their natural environments. The Forest Exhibition Hall provides an educational opportunity to learn about plant life through specialized displays. For families, the large lawn areas and children's play spaces offer a perfect setting to relax in nature. The inclusion of animal displays, such as the Japanese Serow and rabbits, adds an extra layer of excitement for visitors of all ages.
The area surrounding the botanical garden is rich in nature, featuring the Saigaizan Driveway, Saigaizan Park, and Dauryuji Temple. These locations are part of the Mt. Rokko mountain range, ensuring a continuous and beautiful natural landscape for your journey.
