The Kobe Maritime Museum is a comprehensive museum dedicated to the themes of sea, ships, and ports, located in Meriken Park, Chuo-ku, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. Opened in 1987, it introduces the development and history of Kobe Port through various visual and physical exhibits. The building itself is an architectural marvel, featuring a massive white space-frame roof inspired by the sails of a ship or ocean waves. At night, the structure is beautifully illuminated with blue lights, creating a striking silhouette. Adjacent to the museum is 'Kawasaki World,' a corporate museum by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, where visitors can explore advanced technologies across land, sea, and air.
The museum's predecessor was the Kobe International Port Museum, which opened in 1963. The current institution was established in 1987 to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the opening of the Port of Kobe. The exhibits cover a vast timeline, from the history of the modern Kobe Port to the ancient history of the Fujihara capital and the construction of the Orita Pier by Taira no Kiyomori. It provides a profound look at how Kobe has evolved into a vital hub for Japanese maritime trade and international culture.
The museum houses an impressive collection of over 200 ship models, ranging from the 1/8 scale model of the British sailing ship 'Rodney' to models of the Kentoshi (Japanese envoys to Tang China) ships, Kitamaebune-style vessels, and even legendary warships like the 'Yamato,' 'Nagato,' and the aircraft carrier 'Zuikaku.' Inside, you can also find a large-scale replica of a 6-person Venetian gondola.
At the adjacent Kawasaki World, the experience becomes even more immersive with life-sized displays. You can explore the driver's cab and passenger seats of an original 0 Series Shinkansen, or step inside a KV-107 II helicopter. The facility also features interactive spaces with flight simulators, marine sports simulators, and special events like model train running sessions.
The museum is open from 10:00 to 18:00, with the final entry at 17:30. We highly recommend visiting in the evening to witness the building's unique architecture illuminated by blue lights, which blends beautifully with the night view of Meriken Park. As an indoor facility, it is an excellent destination regardless of the weather or season.
Kawasaki World offers various interactive experiences, such as quiz games themed around land, sea, and air, the 'Densha de GO! 2' high-speed rail simulator, and flight and marine sport simulators. These activities allow visitors to touch upon the sophisticated technology and mechanics of Japanese transportation and engineering.
Located within Meriken Park, the museum is surrounded by iconic Kobe landmarks such as the Kobe Port Tower, the Fish Dance monument, the Kobe Port Earthquake Memorial Park, Nankinmachi (Chinatown), and the Harborland shopping district. It is common to combine a visit here with a scenic stroll along the waterfront.
The museum is fully accessible with ramps and elevators, making it suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. Up to two wheelchairs are available for free loan at the facility. A baby room and nursing room are also available.
