Kiyozumi Cosmos Fields is a seasonal scenic spot located in Kazo-cho Kiyozumi, Tanba City, Hyogo Prefecture. The area features a vast expanse of approximately 7 hectares, where about 5 million cosmos flowers bloom in a spectacular display. This site originated as agricultural land in front of Tatsumi-ji Temple, and the cultivation of cosmos as a landscape crop began in 1990. Today, the fields are managed by a local community association, making it a deeply rooted symbol of autumn in the region.
The history of this area is closely tied to the cultivation of landscape crops. Since the start of cosmos cultivation in 1990, the area has developed into a tourist destination, especially after the discovery of a nearby trillium (katakuri) colony in 1992. The site is maintained through a unique community-driven model: the land is provided free of charge by the owner for 20-year periods, and the local community manages the site, including collecting fees to cover the costs of purchasing seeds. This ensures the tradition continues through local cooperation and a three-year rotation system.
The fields feature a diverse variety of cosmos, creating a multi-colored landscape. You can see vibrant varieties such as 'Yellow Campus,' 'Orange Campus,' 'Seashell Mix,' and 'Afternoon White.' Depending on the specific timing, red spider lilies (higanbana) may also bloom simultaneously, adding even more color to the scenery. The sight of these flowers lining the vast rice fields is the quintessential symbol of autumn in this region.
The cosmos fields are typically open from late September to mid-October. Because the operation relies on funds generated to purchase seeds, the area is only open during this specific blooming period. The best time to visit is from early to mid-October. Visiting during daylight hours is highly recommended, as the bright sunlight beautifully illuminates the colorful blossoms.
Occasionally, local events such as the 'Kiyozumi Cosmos Festival' are held. In past years, these celebrations have included the sale of local specialties, food stalls, and traditional activities like 'mochitsuki' (rice cake pounding). These events are organized by a local executive committee, reflecting the community-centered spirit of the area. It is a wonderful place to experience the changing seasons in a rich, natural environment.
The Tanba region offers many other attractions to explore. You can visit sites like the Osugi Dam Natural Park or explore areas with historical landscapes and facilities selling local delicacies. The cosmos fields can easily be integrated into a larger sightseeing route including Tanba-Sasayama City and the wider Tanba area.
