Kitora Kofun is an extremely important historical site located in Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture. Estimated to have been constructed between the late 7th and early 8th centuries, this burial mound is renowned as a mural tomb heavily influenced by continental culture, discovered shortly after the Takamatsuzuka Kofun. Currently maintained as part of the "National Asuka Historical Park," the site integrates seamlessly with its natural surroundings, preserving the atmosphere of the ancient Asuka period.
Kitora Kofun was built during the late 7th to early 8th century, a transitional period in the Kofun era when burial mounds shifted from massive keyhole-shaped structures to smaller circular or square mounds. In 1983, the discovery of the colored murals, including the "Genbu" (Black Tortoise), drew significant international attention. In 2000, it was designated as a National Historic Site, and in 2019, its murals were designated as National Treasures. The ceiling features an authentic astronomical diagram, while the walls depict the "Four Gods" (Shishin) and the "Zodiac signs," providing a window into the advanced astronomy and spiritual beliefs of that era.
The greatest charm of Kitora Kofun lies in its exquisite murals and astronomical charts. The depictions of the Four Gods, such as the "Genbu" (Black Tortoise/Turtle) guarding the north and the "Byakko" (White Tiger) guarding the west, represent the spiritual world of antiquity. The tomb itself is a two-tier circular mound. Visitors can view the reconstructed appearance of the ancient structure from the "Kofun Appreciation Plaza." Additionally, at the Kitora Kofun Mural Museum, "Shishin-no-Yakata," you can explore the world of the murals in detail through high-definition video and life-sized stone chamber models.
The area surrounding Kitora Kofun features spacious lawns and a rich natural environment. While the historical ruins can be enjoyed in any season, visiting during bright daylight hours is ideal for clearly observing the reconstructed mound and the surrounding landscape. When visiting facilities like Shishin-no-Yakata, please check the opening hours (usually 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM) to ensure you can fully experience the exhibits.
At the Kitora Kofun Mural Museum "Shishin-no-Yakata," you can learn about the culture of the ancient Asuka period through immersive exhibits. The basement exhibition room uses high-definition video and models to make history visually engaging and easy to understand.
