Kitanowaki Beach is located in Nakabayashi-cho, Anan City, Tokishima Prefecture, and is honored as one of the '100 Best Beaches in Japan.' Situated facing the Kii Channel, this area is blessed with a rich natural environment and boasts a significant scale, welcoming approximately 100,000 visitors every year. The coastline is characterized by a shallow topography stretching about 2km, with calm waves that make it an ideal environment for swimming and water activities. Its landscape is so highly regarded that it was once designated as one of the most beautiful coasts in Japan.
This coast has long been known as a scenic spot rich in nature. Since around 1950, local municipalities have developed leisure facilities such as changing rooms, lifeguard stations, and shower rooms, allowing the beach to evolve into a community-rooted destination. Following the merger into Anan City, it became one of the leading beach destinations in Tokushima Prefecture, attracting many visitors from distant areas as leisure demand increased. Additionally, the area is deeply connected to local culture, with traditional events sometimes held by local fishermen depending on the season.
The greatest charm of Kitanowaki Beach is its vast sandy beach and the gentle sea. Because the 2km-long shallow coastline produces very calm waves, even beginners and families with small children can enjoy playing in the water with peace of mind. Furthermore, the surrounding area features expansive pine groves, allowing visitors to feel the breath of nature. Depending on the season and weather, you may even catch a view of the distant Ijima islands, offering a beautiful change in scenery.
The main swimming season typically runs from July 1st to August 25th. During this period, many leisure facilities are operational to coincide with the official opening of the sea. While the daytime in summer is perfect for swimming, the sun can be very strong, so it is important to utilize shade and rest areas. During the off-season, the area may host local traditional events, showing a different side of the region. During bright summer hours, you can enjoy the stunning contrast between the high-transparency sea and the blue sky.
Visitors primarily come here to enjoy swimming and water play. Due to the shallow terrain, it is a popular spot for casual water activities and leisure on the sand. The open atmosphere of the seaside provides a perfect way to refresh and forget daily life. However, when engaging in water activities, it is highly recommended to check local safety standards and available facilities.
The surrounding area is dotted with spots where you can feel the rich nature of Anan City. For example, the nearby Tachibana Bay offers beautiful scenery for coastal drives. The Nakabayashi Fishing Port is also close by, allowing you to experience the atmosphere of a local fishing community. Additionally, Anan City has many campsites and parks, making it easy to combine a beach trip with broader regional tourism.
Preparation is key for a day at the beach. While there are changing rooms and showers, please note that some facilities are public (free) while others are part of beach houses (paid). It is common to bring items to avoid the sun, such as hats or umbrellas, as well as a change of clothes and towels.
