The Kitaya Family Weeping Cherry Tree is a historic landmark located in Kahoku City, Ishikawa Prefecture, boasting an age of over 120 years. Its origins date back to 1895 (Meiji 28) when Zenbei, the 15th generation of the Kitaya family, brought seeds from the famous Kenrokuen Garden in Kanazawa to plant them here. The tree is truly magnificent, standing 13 meters tall with a trunk circumference of 1.6 meters and a wide branch spread of 11 meters. The most striking feature is the way the blossoms cascade from the branches, creating a visual effect reminiscent of a falling waterfall. From early to mid-April, a sea of pale pink flowers blankets the landscape.
The history of this cherry tree is deeply tied to the local heritage. In 1895, the seeds were brought from Kenrokuen—one of Japan's most prestigious gardens—by Zenbei of the Kitaya family. Since then, the tree has been carefully preserved for over a century as a symbol of the local landscape. It represents a beautiful connection between the refined culture of Kanazawa and the natural beauty of the Kahoku region.
