The Kitaiogawa Rice Terraces are a breathtaking scenic area located in the Kitaiogawa district of Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture. Spreading across the foothills of Mt. Ogatake, one of Japan's 300 famous mountains, the area presents a quintessential Japanese rural landscape where nature and agriculture exist in perfect harmony. In July 1999, this site was selected as one of 'Japan's 100 Best Rice Terraces,' and in February 2022, it was further honored as part of the 'Tsunagu Tanada Heritage' (Post-Tanada 100 Selection). The area covers approximately 9.5 hectares with about 280 individual terraced plots, following the gentle slopes at an elevation of 100 to 150 meters. Surrounded by peaks such as Mt. Sumon, the landscape offers a profound sense of natural abundance.
Agriculture in this region has long utilized the natural topography to sustain the community. The rice terraces, fed by the abundant waters flowing from Mt. Ogatake, have played a vital role in supporting local life for generations. The recognition of this site in both the 'Japan's 100 Best Rice Terraces' and the 'Tsunagu Tanada Heritage' highlights the immense cultural value of this landscape and the importance of preserving the rural traditions that have been passed down through the ages. The appearance of the terraces changes dramatically with the seasons. Visitors are often mesmerized by the sight of the sky reflecting in the water-filled paddies during the planting season, or the lush green growth of the rice plants. The area offers a stunning panoramic view, with the surrounding mountains like Yagigahaba (one of Niigata's 100 Best Scenic Spots), the ruins of Takagi Castle, Mt. Hakamagoshi, and Mt. Ogatake framing the landscape. Additionally, well-maintained paths, such as the Beech Forest Road, allow visitors to enjoy peaceful strolls through a rich forest environment.
The Kitaiogawa Rice Terraces offer a different face to visitors throughout the year. From spring to summer, you can enjoy the beautiful reflections in the water-filled paddies and the vibrant greenery of the growing rice. In late April, the landscape is particularly special, featuring the blooming of Katakuri (dogtooth violet) flowers against the backdrop of Mt. Ogatake, which may still hold patches of snow. There are several spots nearby to enhance your visit. After a walk through the nature, you can relax at local hot spring facilities like Yagigahaba Onsen or Shimoda Yagibine Onsen. The area also features charming traditional folk-house cafes, local roadside stations, and even the Snow Peak headquarters, making it easy to plan a comprehensive travel itinerary that combines nature, culture, and relaxation.
As you will be walking through natural terrain, please wear comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes (such as sneakers). Since this is an outdoor, open-air location, we recommend bringing rain gear, a hat, and sunscreen to prepare for changing weather and sun exposure. Please be mindful that these are active agricultural sites; respect the local farmers by staying on designated paths and avoiding restricted areas.
