The Kitabatake Clan Residence Garden, located in Misugi Town, Tsu City, Mie Prefecture, is a site officially designated as a National Historic Site and a Place of Scenic Beauty. This location holds deep historical significance as the former residence of the Kitabatke clan, and it maintains a landscape that exists in perfect harmony with the surrounding natural environment. Today, the garden serves as a precious site for preserving and transmitting the traditional Japanese garden culture, functioning as part of the sacred grounds of Kitabatake Shrine.
The history of this site is profound, deeply connected to the Kitabatake clan who once held power in this region. In 1936 (Showa 11), the area was designated as a National Historic Site and Place of Scenic Beauty. Later, in 2006 (Heisei 18), it was integrated with the ruins of Kiriyama Castle, the former stronghold of the Kitabatke clan, and re-designated as the "Taki Kitabatake Clan Castle and Residence Site." This area once served as a vital strategic base for the samurai class during the feudal era.
The most striking feature of the garden is its exquisite landscape, which has been preserved as a designated Place of Scenic Beauty. The space offers a sense of historical elegance, where the man-made structures harmonize seamlessly with the natural topography and vegetation. Additionally, the adjacent Kitabatake Shrine features a shrine much dedicated to Kitabatake Aki moto, known as the first provincial governor of Ise. Visiting the shrine allows visitors to understand the broader historical context of the region alongside its significant architectural and cultural assets.
The garden reveals a different, beautiful face with every season. Visitors can enjoy the changing colors of nature during spring and autumn, which beautifully frame the historical scenery. The garden is open daily from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. We recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours to fully appreciate the intricate details of the garden and its seamless integration with the surrounding wilderness.
