Yoshimizu-en is a magnificent Japanese garden located in Akiota Town, Yamagata District, Hiroshima Prefecture. Designated as a scenic spot of Hiroshima Prefecture, it was originally developed by the head of the Kakesumiya family, who were prominent in the traditional 'tatara' ironmaking industry. As a private garden, it is not open to the general public most of the time; instead, it opens exclusively on specific Saturdays and Sundays during the spring and autumn seasons. The garden features a classic 'stroll-style' (kaiyu-shiki) design centered around the beautiful Tsubo-ike Pond, offering a landscape that harmonizes perfectly with nature. It is also a vital habitat for the Hyla japonica (Japanese tree frog), a natural monument of Hiroshima Prefecture.
The area has a long history of iron production, serving as the base for the Kakesumiya family. In 1781 (the first year of the Tenmei era), the foundation of the garden began under the direction of Hachiemon Sasaki, the 16th head of the Kakesumiya family. During the same era, the Yoshimizu-tei Teahouse and Kanayako Shrine were established, and later, the Matsubayashi-an Yakushi-do temple was relocated to this site in 1807. Throughout its history, many notable figures have visited this serene location. The garden was officially designated as a scenic spot of Hiroshima Prefecture in 1951.
The garden is designed as a stroll garden, allowing visitors to walk around the perimeter of the central pond. The most iconic view is the combination of the central Tsubo-ike Pond and the Yoshimizu-tei Teahouse, situated on the northern hills. Yoshimizu-tei is a traditional sukiya-style building constructed in 1787, featuring a simple and elegant two-mat and four-mat layout. Other significant structures include the Kanayako Shrine on the west side and the Matsubayashi-an Yakushi-do on the south side. Visitors can also observe the beautiful Edo-period maple trees and the natural habitat of the Hyla japonica frog.
While the garden's appearance changes beautifully with the seasons, access is strictly limited to specific dates. The primary visiting periods are during the spring opening (around June) and the autumn opening (around November). In June, there are sometimes events related to the Hyla japonica frog. The garden is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM; visiting during the bright daylight hours is recommended to fully appreciate the intricate details of the pond and the garden architecture.
During the open days, you can observe the historic architecture of the Yoshimizu-tei and the surrounding natural environment. The grounds also feature literary monuments related to the people who once thrived in this area, adding a layer of historical depth. Please note that the garden is a place for quiet contemplation of nature and history rather than active recreation; it is a space meant for peaceful appreciation.
Yoshimizu-en is nestled within the lush natural landscape of Akiota Town. The surrounding area offers many scenic destinations, such as Sandankyo Gorge, making it an excellent destination for a scenic drive or a nature walk. Access is primarily via car or bus. If using public transportation, the Kake-Chuo bus stop is the nearest major transit point.
Because the garden features natural terrain, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Since the garden is only open during specific seasonal windows, it is essential to check the official opening schedule before your visit. To preserve the historical value of the buildings and the ecosystem, please follow all local etiquette and respect the tranquility of the site.
