Kiryu Tenmangu is a shrine steeped in history and tradition, located in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture. It enshrines a spirit from the famous Kitano Tenmangu in Kyoto and is recognized as one of the 'Five Great Tenjin Shrines of Kanto.' Its greatest draw is the magnificent shrine architecture, a designated Important Cultural Property of Gunma Prefecture. The main shrine and offering hall, built upon a rocky foundation, feature incredibly exquisite and beautiful wood carvings that showcase the advanced architectural techniques and the soul of the craftsmen of that era. Beyond its value as a historical monument, the shrine is a vibrant center for local culture, hosting the popular 'Antique Market for Old Folk Tools' every month.
The origins of this shrine are ancient, said to date back to the era of the 12th Emperor Keiko. Originally revered as Isobe Myojin, it came under the protection of the Kiryu family, who ruled the area around 1187. Over time, it evolved into its current form as Kiryu Tenmangu. The shrine's grandeur was further enhanced during the Tensho era (1591) when it was developed as a key site in Kiryu Shinmachi. The site is deeply connected to major Japanese historical turning points, including the Eastern Campaign of Tokugawa Ieyasu and prayers for victory in the Battle of Sekigahara. As a shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, it has long served as a symbol of academic excellence and culture.
The most notable feature is the complex consisting of the Main Shrine, Offering Hall, and Worship Hall. Often called the 'Tenjin on the Rocks' due to its position, the pillars, beams, and eaves are adorned with breathtakingly detailed carvings of dragons, mythological figures, and plants, creating a stunning visual experience.
The Kiryu Gate is a beautiful entrance that reflects a sense of historical continuity. It was newly constructed to commemorate the Great Repair of the Heisei era, honoring the history of the original gate that was planned during the Edo period but never completed.
The shrine grounds feature various sub-shrines, such as Hotesuna Shrine, which enshrines seven deities, and Zaihoku Inari Shrine, which governs business prosperity, each offering unique spiritual blessings.
You can enjoy the changing seasons through the shrine's atmosphere and even its Goshuin (temple stamps), which often feature seasonal motifs like plum blossoms or oxen. We recommend visiting during the plum blossom season in spring or enjoying the lush greenery in summer.
The 'Antique Market for Old Folk Tools' is a lively event held from approximately 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM on the first Saturday or Sunday of the month. With about 80 stalls attracting thousands of visitors, it is known as one of the three major antique markets in the Kanto region. It is a unique opportunity to discover rare antiques and vintage tools.
Kiryu Tenmangu performs various rituals for life milestones, such as Hatsumiyamairi (first shrine visit), Shichi-Go-San, and ceremonies for academic success or traffic safety. Please note that for certain rituals or summer-specific ceremonies (June–September), advanced reservation via phone or FAX is required.
Collecting Goshuin (sacred stamps) written in traditional calligraphy is a wonderful way to commemorate your visit. Please be aware that Goshuin are typically provided in a 'written-out' (pre-prepared) format.
Kiryu City is famous for 'Kiryu-ori' (Kiryu textiles). After visiting the shrine, we recommend strolling through the surrounding streets to experience the local textile-related landscapes and history.
While standard attire is fine, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes as the shrine contains stairs and uneven rocky areas. This is especially important when attending the busy antique markets.
Please prepare cash for Goshuin or ritual offerings, as most transactions are cash-based. It is best to check with the shrine regarding specific payment methods in advance.
