Kiryu Meijikan is a stunning example of pseudo-Western architecture from the early Meiji era, located in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture. Having served various roles such as a medical center and a local government office, its historical significance is officially recognized as an Important Cultural Property. The building itself is a work of art, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the atmosphere and elegance of the Meiji period through its preserved structure and interior.
The construction of this building dates back to 1878 (Meiji 11) in what was then Maebashi, originally serving as a medical center with an attached medical school. Over the decades, the structure underwent several-purpose changes and was eventually relocated and renovated to its current site in the early Showa era. It has a rich history, having functioned as a village office and a community center following the merger of Kiryu City. In 1976, it was designated as an Important Cultural Property as the 'Former Gunma Prefectural Health Center.' After careful preservation and restoration, it was returned to its original-style splendor and now operates as 'Kiryu Meijikan,' a cultural facility dedicated to preserving local history.
Inside the museum, visitors can find permanent exhibitions of precious items such as Meiji-era pianos, organs, and other historical documents related to Western-style architecture of the time. These exhibits provide a deep understanding of the lifestyle, culture, and architectural evolution of the era. The most significant attraction, however, is the architecture itself; the beautifully restored structural details allow you to experience the exquisite design and craftsmanship of the Meiji period up close.
The facility is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We recommend visiting during daylight hours to fully appreciate the intricate architectural details and the clarity of the exhibits. Additionally, the museum occasionally holds special free-entry events, such as the Meijikan Opening Anniversary in May, the Shichi-Go-San celebration in October, and Cultural Property Protection Week in November. Visiting during these special periods offers a more profound cultural experience.
Beyond the museum tour, you can immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Meiji era while viewing historical musical instruments. The facility also features an on-site tea room where you can relax in a tranquil setting. On certain 1st, 2nd, and 4th Sundays of the month, live musical performances are held in the tea room, allowing you to enjoy history accompanied by beautiful melodies in a truly unique space.
