The Kinugawa Tateiwadai Suspension Bridge is a pedestrian-only suspension bridge, approximately 140m in length and 37m in height, connecting the Kinugawa Onsen hot spring town with the famous scenic spot 'Tateiwa'. The greatest charm of this bridge is the ability to observe the rushing Kinugawa River and the lush, surrounding mountains from a high vantage point. Beyond the bridge, the massive 'Tateiwa' rock stands as a symbol of the natural splendor of Nikko National Park, showcasing the magnificent geological formations of the region.
The name 'Tateiwa' (Shield Rock) is derived from its shape, which resembles a shield used in ancient battles. This massive rock, reaching about 100m in height, has served as the centerpiece of the local landscape for centuries. The walking route via the suspension bridge was designed to allow visitors to observe the unique topography and natural sculpting of the Kinugawa area while preserving the pristine natural environment.
There are several points of interest once you cross the bridge. If you head to the right after crossing, you will find the 'Tateiwa Observatory' within a 10-minute walk. From here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the clear Kinugawa river, the hot spring town below, and the distant mountain ranges including Mt. Keicho. If you head to the left, the 'Furugama Falls' is just a 5-minute walk away, offering a beautiful view of cascading water. Additionally, the 'Tateiwa Kinuhime Shrine' is located near the top of the rock, representing the deep connection between nature and local spiritual beliefs.
The bridge offers different expressions throughout the four seasons. You can enjoy the fresh greenery in spring, the deep lushness of summer, the vibrant autumn foliage, and the serene snowy landscapes in winter. The changing colors of the mountains in autumn and the bright greenery of early summer are particularly striking. Daytime visits are recommended to clearly see the river flow and the distant mountain ranges.
This area allows for more than just walking across a bridge; it is a place for nature observation. You can experience the changing terrain by passing through a hand-carved tunnel, enjoying the panorama from the observatory, or observing the falls. For a cultural experience, visitors can seek a 'Goshuin' (sacred seal) from the Tateiwa Kinuhime Shrine. Please note that Goshuin are currently handled at two locations: the Kinugawa/Kawajiri Onsen Tourist Information Center and the Kinu Terrace (Machino-eki Yuing PLAZA).
The bridge is a central part of the Kinugawa Onsen sightseeing route. Nearby attractions include 'Tobu World Square,' which features miniature replicas of world-famous landmarks, and the 'Kinugawa River Downstream Cruise' for enjoying nature from the water. The area is well-equipped with restaurants and rest areas, making it easy to stop by during your sightseeing tour.
As this is a natural environment, it is highly recommended to wear shoes with stable grip. Since visiting the shrines, waterfalls, and observatories requires walking, please wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes. To protect the environment, please take all trash home with you and refrain from any actions that may damage the natural surroundings.
