Located at the foot of Mount Konze (Konzeyama) in Ritto City, Shiga Prefecture, Konzeshi is a significant temple of the Tendai sect. It is said to have been founded by the monk Ryoben by the order of Emperor Shomu during the Nara period. Historically known as 'Konzeyama Daihodoji,' it was once a major center of Buddhism in the Konan region, boasting thirty-six monastic quarters and twenty-five sub-temples. Today, it remains a sanctuary of peace, preserving its ancient architecture and sacred atmosphere.
The history of Konzeshi dates back to the Tenpyo era (around 733 AD). It played a vital role in protecting the northeast (the 'demon gate') of the ancient capital, Heijo-kyo, and held the prestigious status of a 'Jokaku-ji' (state-authorized temple). During the medieval period, it served as a place of prayer for Emperor Go-Daigo. Although it faced decline following a fire in the mid-16th century, it was successfully rebuilt. Records even show that the Tokugawa Ieyasu granted the temple thirty koku of rice during the Edo period, highlighting its deep connections to national politics. It continues to preserve its traditions while harmonizing with the natural beauty of Mount Konze.
The temple grounds are dotted with impressive structures and cultural assets. The 'Hondo' (Main Hall), which enshrines the Shakyamuni Buddha, the 'Nio Gate,' and the 'Kokuzo-do' are particularly striking. The temple houses extremely rare wooden sculptures, including the 'Wooden Seated Shakyamuni Buddha' (218 cm tall) and the 'Wooden Standing Kundali Myoo' (360.5 cm tall), both attributed to the Heian period. These figures are vital legacies of the region's history. Visitors can also enjoy the harmony between architecture and nature, surrounded by ancient trees like the 'Thousand-Year Cedar' and seasonal maples.
Konzeshi reveals different faces throughout the seasons. From spring to summer, the surrounding greenery is vibrant and full of life. In autumn, the maple trees turn brilliant colors, offering a stunning landscape of red and gold. For a truly spiritual experience, an early morning visit is highly recommended, as the mountain air is exceptionally fresh and the silence is profound. Please note that during the winter (December to March), the closing time is earlier than usual.
