Konrenji is a Zen Buddhist temple of the Soto school located in Nishio City, Aichi Prefecture. The most significant feature of this temple is the "Mida-do," which was designated as a National Treasure in 1955. This building is a precious relic that showcases the architectural techniques of the mid-Kamakura period. The gentle curves of the cypress-bark roof (hiwadabuki) and the deep eaves create a unique landscape that harmonizes beautifully with the surrounding natural scenery.

While the exact date of its founding is unknown, the temple has a rich history. Originally a sub-temple of Kofukuji (Shingon sect), it was moved to its current location in 1340 by Ashikaga Takauji and named Seoryuzan Konrenji. During the Edo period, the temple transitioned to the Soto school under the patronage of the Kira clan, local lords and hatamoto of the Edo Shogunate. This long-standing connection with influential historical figures has helped preserve the temple as a sacred site for centuries.

The architectural structure of the National Treasure Mida-do is the primary attraction. It follows the "Ikken Shimen-do" style, featuring a structure of three bays by three bays. The exterior is characterized by its elegant cypress-bark roof and deep eaves. Inside, you can find the "Wooden Amida Nyorai and Two Attendant Figures," which are designated as Aichi Prefectural Tangible Cultural Properties. Visitors can also observe unique architectural details, such as the use of "fuhebiki" (boat-shaped beams) in the pillar brackets and "shitomi" (traditional shutters) between the front pillars, blending residential and religious design.
