Kinchakuda is a lush, natural plain located in Koma Hongo, Hidaka City, Saitama Prefecture. The area earned its name because its shape resembles a 'kinchaku' (a traditional Japanese drawstring pouch), a result of the Komagawa River's wide southern meander. The greatest draw is the overwhelming display of color in autumn. During the red spider lily (Manjushage) season, a vast area is blanketed in deep crimson, creating a spectacular sight as if a red carpet has been laid across the earth. This massive blooming site attracts visitors from both Japan and abroad.
The history of this land is ancient; the name 'Koma' refers to the immigrants from the Korean Peninsula who settled here around the year 716. While the area was once primarily flat rice paddies, it is believed that the river's meanders and floods brought in sediment along with the bulbs, leading to the current large-scale growth of red spider lilies. During the Showa era, as the area was managed and maintained, this massive bloom was discovered and widely reported, turning it into a nationally recognized tourist destination. Additionally, the 'Ai-ai Bridge,' one of Japan's longest wooden truss bridges, was completed in 1996, adding further beauty to the landscape.
The absolute highlight of Kinchakuda is the autumn red spider lily season. An area of approximately 22 hectares with a diameter of about 500 meters is filled with red flowers, offering a view found nowhere else. The landscape also changes with the seasons; for example, you can enjoy yellow rapeseed flowers in the spring, allowing visitors to experience the changing colors of Japan's four seasons. The combination of the flowing Komagawa River and the unique natural topography provides a deeply relaxing experience.
The best time to visit is from September to October during the peak of the red spider lily season. During the day, the bright sunlight makes the crimson colors pop, making it perfect for photography. At dusk, the changing light creates a more mystical and ethereal atmosphere. Even outside the peak season, the riverside scenery and natural abundance are worth enjoying.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll through the vast grounds while admiring seasonal flowers. During the autumn peak, the area becomes quite lively with many tourists enjoying the natural beauty. There are also nearby hiking trails and historical sites to explore. The area around Kinchakuda is rich in historical charm. Nearby, you can find sites like the Koma Komajin Shrine and the Koma Family Residence, which is a designated National Important Cultural Property. For those interested in hiking, the trails of Mount Hiwada (305m) offer a panoramic view of Hidaka City. Additionally, modern attractions like Metsä Village are close by, allowing for a diverse travel itinerary.
We strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, as the area is quite large. Depending on the season, a hat for sun protection or items for changing weather may be useful.
