The Kikuya Family Residence is a National Important Cultural Property located in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It was the residence of the Kikuya family, a wealthy merchant family that served as official purveyors to the Mori Clan, and it also functioned as a prestigious guest house for high-ranking visitors. The architecture preserves the distinct style of the early Edo period, making it one of the oldest surviving large-scale machiya (townhouses) of its kind. While the estate covers a vast area of approximately 2,000 tsubo, about one-third is currently open to the public, allowing visitors to simultaneously enjoy historical art, traditional household tools, and a breathtaking Japanese garden.
The Kikuya family transitioned from samurai status during the Ouchi clan era to becoming influential merchants who contributed significantly to the development of Hagi. The family held important roles in the Hagi domain, serving the local government and participating in social affairs. The estate consists of five buildings, including the main house, which are designated as National Important Cultural Properties, symbolizing the rich history and culture of the region. This area is renowned as a castle town that still preserves the atmosphere of the Edo period.
Inside the residence, you can admire historical architecture and precious artifacts. Each building—the main house (Shuya), the storehouses (Honkura, Kinura, Komekura), and the kitchen (Kamaba)—offers a unique atmosphere and displays items such as ancient books, art, and daily tools that illustrate how people lived during that era. The Japanese garden also changes its appearance with the seasons. Additionally, the facility features 3D video explanations to help visitors deepen their visual understanding of the history.
The Kikuya Family Residence shows different faces depending on the season. Notably, from late April to mid-May and from late October to late November, a larger portion of the estate is opened to the public, allowing for a more comprehensive view of the architecture and gardens. Furthermore, during specific periods, the "Night Museum & Night Cafe" is held. This offers a magical experience where you can enjoy cafe time while gazing at the beautifully illuminated Shoin garden under the soft lights reminiscent of the Edo period.
Beyond simple sightseeing, there are plans for deeper cultural immersion. A "Guided Tour" led by a professional guide provides detailed explanations, including access to the rarely opened Shin-niwa Garden. Another popular option is the "Tea Experience Tour," where you can enjoy high-quality matcha served in authentic Hagi-ware tea bowls within a historic room. The facility also accepts inquiries for photo weddings and commemorative photography sessions.
The residence is nestled within the beautiful scenery of the Hagi Castle Town. The surrounding area features charming alleys selected as one of the "100 Best Japanese Streets," perfect for a stroll through history. We also recommend using a rental cycle or shared bike to explore other historical sites around the castle town.
To protect the historical architecture, we recommend wearing comfortable footwear suitable for walking on uneven surfaces. Please be mindful of the exhibits and the buildings.
