The Kikuchi region has been sustained for centuries by the abundant water resources provided by the Kikuchi River. For over 2,000 years, agriculture has formed the foundation of the local culture, and the traditions of utilizing this rich water resource continue to this day. The area surrounding Kikuchi Valley is designated as a natural forest recreation area, where a delicate balance between nature conservation and public enjoyment is strictly maintained to protect the local ecosystem.
The greatest attraction of Kikuchi Valley is the stunning landscape created by the interplay of clear streams and waterfalls. A particularly magical phenomenon occurs from mid-July to August, when sunlight pierces through the canopy to create 'pillars of light' (light rays). This is a rare natural event that many travelers hope to witness. Additionally, the established walking trails allow visitors to observe the intricate details of the water flow and local vegetation from a very close distance.
The scenery evolves beautifully through the four seasons. In spring, the valley is filled with the freshness of young leaves and mountain wisteria; in summer, the cool shade and clear streams provide a refreshing escape from the heat; in autumn, the vibrant colors of the foliage paint the landscape; and in winter, the valley transforms into a serene, silvery world of snow. For those wishing to see the famous light rays, visiting during midday in the summer months is highly recommended. The primary activity here is a leisurely stroll through nature. The well-maintained paths allow you to feel the atmosphere of the valley and the power of the water. However, please note that swimming is strictly prohibited, and activities in the water are restricted. Additionally, the use of drones requires official government permission.
Near Kikuchi Valley, you can find facilities like the Kikuchi Visitor Center, which provides local information and sells regional specialties and light snacks. The entire Kikuchi area is deeply connected to agriculture, ensuring that the surrounding landscapes remain beautifully natural and scenic.
For a comfortable walk, we highly recommend wearing sneakers or comfortable walking shoes. The terrain can be slippery or have certain slopes, so please avoid wearing high heels. To protect the environment, bringing a sense of respect is essential: pets are not allowed, and collecting plants/animals, camping, using open flames, smoking, or operating drones is strictly prohibited. Please be especially careful with children near areas where the water current is fast.
