Kugiwa is one of the most iconic rock formations in the Noto Kando area of Shika Town, Ishikawa Prefecture. The site features two massive rocks, measuring 16 meters and 12 meters in height, standing side-by-side as if embracing one another. Because of this, they are often referred to as 'Meoto Iwa' (Married Couple Rocks). A sacred Shimenawa rope is tied around the rocks, adding a sense of spiritual significance to their striking silhouette. The name 'Kugiwa' is derived from the fact that the shape of the rocks resembles traditional weaving tools.
A fascinating legend regarding the deity of weaving is passed down in this region. It tells the story of the deity Nunaki Irihime no Mikoto, who is said to have brought weaving techniques to the Noto land. According to legend, while the deity was crossing the mountains carrying a weaving loom, they were attacked by bandits. To protect the sacred tool, the deity threw the loom into the sea, where it miraculously transformed into these massive rocks. Thus, Kugiwa is considered a 'gift' left behind by the gods.
The primary attraction is the magnificent sight of the two giant rocks rising from the sea. The larger rock is known as the 'Female Rock' and the smaller one as the 'Male Rock,' showcasing the beautiful contrast of natural shapes. Since Kugiwa faces west, it is a renowned spot for observing the changing colors of the sky during twilight. The combination of the sun setting over the Noto coastline and the dark silhouettes of the rocks creates a view that can only be experienced here.
While Kugiwa can be visited year-round, the late afternoon is the most highly recommended time. To witness the most dramatic scenery, try to arrive shortly before sunset to see the sky transform. Depending on the season, there may also be occasional light-up events where the rocks are illuminated against the dark night sky.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll while taking in the vast natural scenery of the Noto coast. The area is ideal for a scenic drive, and most visitors arrive by car to explore the surrounding coastline. It is a perfect stop for those enjoying a road trip through the Noto Peninsula.
