Keya no Omon Park is a scenic natural park and walking trail located along the coast of Itoshima City, Fukuoka Prefecture. This location is affectionately known as 'Totoro's Forest' due to its enchanting and unique landscape. The trail within the park is covered by a dense canopy of trees, creating a serene space that feels completely detached from everyday life. After a pleasant 10-minute walk through the forest, you will reach an observation deck. From here, you can witness the grand scale of Keya no Omon, one of Japan's largest basalt sea caves, viewed from its rear side. It is a perfect spot to experience both the architectural beauty of nature and profound silence.
This area is part of the Genkai Quasi-National Park and is a highly significant region for nature conservation. The adjacent 'Keya no Omon' is a geological marvel, boasting a height of 64m, a depth of 90m, and a width of 10m. Its distinctive columnar jointing is recognized as a national natural monument. The park's walking path has been carefully maintained to allow visitors to experience this grand natural history up close while enjoying a path that leads toward the sea.
The greatest highlight is the observation deck at the end of the trail. Here, you can gaze upon the powerful landscape formed by the erosion of waves against massive rock walls and the striking basalt columnar jointing. The trail itself is an experience, acting as a lush green tunnel that earns it the nickname 'Totoro's Forest.' The journey, passing by the Taiso Shrine and heading toward the ocean, is a route where you can truly feel the energy of the natural world.
While nature can be enjoyed throughout the year, the period from April to November is particularly pleasant for walking while feeling the refreshing sea breeze. During the bright daylight hours, the contrast between the blue sky and the deep green forest is stunning, making the view from the observation deck exceptionally clear. For those seeking a more mystical atmosphere, visiting during the early morning or at dusk offers a quiet, ethereal experience.
The primary activity here is a 'nature walk.' Walking through the well-maintained forest trail allows you to enjoy forest bathing (shinrin-yoku) as you head toward the observation deck. The process of walking through the greenery is a meditative experience that helps you feel one with nature. Additionally, visitors can enjoy strolling along the nearby coastline to admire the maritime scenery.
Near the park lies the Taiso Shrine. The coastline also features 'Niginohama,' a beautiful stretch of white sand and green pine trees. For those wishing to stay overnight, the 'Keya Campground' is located nearby, allowing for an immersive stay in the heart of nature. Combining these spots will allow you to fully experience the natural beauty of the Itoshima region.
Since the trail is a natural path, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes as there may be uneven or unpaved surfaces. It is also wise to bring a hat and plenty of water to stay hydrated. As this is a public natural space, please follow environmental etiquette by taking all your trash home with you to protect the ecosystem. While entry to the park is free, please note that fees may apply for nearby parking or local facilities.
