Mount Kenunai Observatory is a scenic viewpoint located on the slopes of Mount Kenunai in Otaru, Hokkaido, at an altitude of approximately 548.2 meters. From this vantage point, visitors can enjoy an expansive panoramic view of the Otaru cityscape, Ishikari Bay, and the vast ocean stretching toward the horizon. During the day, the striking contrast between the blue sea and the urban landscape is a highlight, while at night, the area transforms into a beautiful display of shimmering city lights. Surrounded by rich nature, the landscape changes beautifully with each passing season.

The night view is also a major attraction, where the lights of the city spread out like jewels. Depending on the season, you can experience different expressions of nature: the fresh greenery of spring, the vibrant blue sea of summer, and the colorful changing leaves of autumn.
The scenery changes significantly depending on the season. In spring, you can see the fresh budding greenery; in summer, the sea appears a brilliant blue. During the day, the vastness of the ocean is most impressive, while at dusk, the shifting colors of the sky create a magical atmosphere. At night, the cluster of city lights provides a spectacular view. Please note that the area may be closed during the winter season, so it is advisable to check the status before your visit.
The primary activity here is to stop during a scenic drive to soak in the views. The observatory is equipped with a parking lot, making it easily accessible by car. Taking a moment to watch the harmony between the city and the natural expanse of Ishikari Bay is a deeply relaxing experience. As part of a larger driving route, you can easily incorporate this stop into a trip that includes Otaru's coastal spots and hot spring areas.
The surrounding area is dotted with essential Otaru sightseeing spots. You can visit the historic Otaru Canal and the Otaru Music Box Museum, or explore the coastal Otaru Port Marina. Nearby hot spring facilities like Hiraishi Onsen are also accessible. Additionally, popular roadside stations such as 'Space Apple Yoichi' and 'Boyo Nakayama' are nearby, making this an excellent waypoint for exploring the wider Otaru and Yoichi tourism routes.
There is no fee for using the observatory itself. However, if you use nearby facilities or shops, please check if they accept cash, credit cards, or IC cards.
English language support is limited at the observatory. If you plan to use nearby services, it is recommended to check their language capabilities in advance.
No prior reservation is required to visit the observatory.
Because it is located on a mountainside, it can be windy and much cooler than the city, especially at night. We highly recommend bringing a warm jacket or extra layers for night viewing. Be prepared for sudden weather changes.
Photography is permitted and encouraged, but please be mindful of other visitors while taking photos.
While there are maintained paths from the parking lot to the viewing area, some elevation changes and uneven surfaces may exist.
The area may be closed during the winter season. Please check local conditions before visiting. To preserve the natural environment, please ensure you take all trash with you.
