Located in Saigo Village, Nishishirakawa District, Fukushima Prefecture, "Kenkei" is a magnificent Katsura tree standing approximately 35 meters tall with an age exceeding 300 years. The tree is characterized by its unique "twin-trunk" structure, where two massive trunks diverge from a single root, giving it the striking appearance of a sword—hence the name "Kenkei" (Sword Katsura). In 2000, it was officially recognized by the Forestry Agency as one of the "100 Great Trees of the Forest," marking it as a significant natural heritage site for the region.
The site is steeped in ancient folklore. Legend has it that a malevolent spirit or "demon" once haunted this land, causing suffering to the local people. It is said that the local lord, Matsudaira Sadanobu, used a sword to seal the demon away, and this tree became a symbol of that victory. Because of this historical narrative, the tree is not merely a botanical specimen but a revered symbol of protection and spiritual significance that has been cherished by the local community for generations.
