Keiseki-en is a magnificent Japanese garden spanning 20,000 square meters, designed to commemorate the completion of the Yabakei Dam in 1987. The garden masterfully utilizes the dam's water to recreate the natural mountain stream of the Yabakei region, using tens of thousands of stones to achieve a realistic landscape. With a diverse collection of 20,000 trees representing 50 different species, the garden offers a dynamic interplay of ponds, rocks, and waterfalls. The landscape is defined by the changing colors of nature and the artistic interplay of light and shadow.
The garden was constructed to celebrate the completion of the Yabakei Dam, serving as a symbol of the region's water resource utilization and natural environment. The landscaping techniques used to mimic the topography and flow of the Yabakei area reflect a deep harmony between local history and the natural world. For many years, it has been maintained as a landmark of the local landscape.
The garden features a central pond surrounded by carefully placed rocks, waterfalls, and a wide variety of trees. The most striking views are the reflections on the water's surface and the detailed way the stones recreate a mountain stream. Visitors can also enjoy traditional structures such as gazebos (azumaya) and wooden bridges, which add to the classical aesthetic. In autumn, the vibrant colors of the foliage are illuminated at night, creating a completely different, ethereal atmosphere compared to the daytime.
While beautiful year-round, Keiseki-en is particularly famous as a premier destination for autumn colors. During the autumn season, a special night illumination event is held, typically from 17:00 to 21:00. This allows visitors to see the glowing autumn leaves reflected in the still waters of the pond. The illumination period usually runs from early November to early December. Other seasons also offer unique beauty, such as the fresh greenery of spring and the changing hues of the trees throughout the year.
The garden is designed for leisurely strolls along well-maintained paths, allowing you to immerse yourself in the scenery of ponds, waterfalls, and rock formations. During the autumn illumination period, you can experience a magical evening walk under the artificial lights. The surrounding area also offers scenic cycling routes that take advantage of the beautiful natural environment.
The area surrounding Keiseki-en is filled with the natural beauty of the Yabakei region. Nearby attractions include the Maple Yabakei Cycling Road, as well as various historical temples and local cultural facilities, all of which contribute to the rich tapestry of nature and culture in the Yabakei area.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes for your stroll. If you plan to visit during the autumn night illumination, please bring warm clothing to protect against the evening chill. As some areas of the garden may be dark, carrying a small flashlight can be helpful. Please be mindful of the environment by taking all trash home with you. While the parking lot is free, it can become crowded on weekends, so please plan your visit with plenty of time to spare.
