Keisei Rose Garden, located in Yachiyo City, Chiba Prefecture, is one of the largest rose gardens in Japan. Established in 1959, it is a facility that aims to cultivate rose varieties and spread rose culture globally, boasting numerous international awards. The vast 30,000 square meter grounds feature over 10,000 roses from approximately 1,600 varieties, alongside various trees and flowers. The landscape is characterized by artistic vertical displays using arches, screens, and pergolas, creating a changing scenery every season. It is also officially recognized as a 'Lovers' Sanctuary,' making it a highly popular destination for travelers seeking a romantic atmosphere.
The garden is managed by Keisei Rose Horticulture Co., Ltd. Since its inception, the facility has focused on rose breeding with a mission to create world-class varieties. In 1999, it was renewed as a complex facility featuring a rose garden, rose shop, restaurant, garden center, and event spaces. The garden reflects a unique blend of Japanese culture and art, featuring a terrace inspired by the famous manga 'The Rose of Versailles' and a gazebo produced by renowned bridal designer Yumi Katsura.
The garden is divided into several themed areas. The 'French Formal Garden' features geometric patterns and elegant structures like screens and poles, offering a sophisticated Western aesthetic. In contrast, the 'English Natural Style Garden' provides a more relaxed atmosphere with aquatic and wetland plants. The large greenhouse allows visitors to enjoy greenery year-round, even in colder months. Other photogenic spots include the landmark 'Yumi's Gazebo,' the view from Rose Hill, and the massive 60-year-old rose arch in spring.
There are two main seasons for roses: Spring and Autumn. The peak for spring roses is from mid-May to early June, while the autumn peak is from mid-October to early November. During these times, special events like the 'Rose Festival' and 'Autumn Fair' are held. From late November to December, you can enjoy the unique beauty of red rose hips and autumn foliage. For the best experience, visit in the morning when the soft light enhances the colors of the roses, or during autumn evenings when the lights create a romantic ambiance.
Beyond simple viewing, the garden offers various experiences. The Rose Shop sells rose-themed gifts and daily items, while the Garden Center offers seasonal plants. For a refined break, visit the cafe 'Patio' or the restaurant 'La Rose' to enjoy tea and meals in a rose-filled setting. The garden also hosts seminars and exhibitions to deepen your botanical knowledge. For easier navigation across the large grounds, electric-assist share cycles are available for rent.
Located in Yachiyo, Chiba, the garden is surrounded by rich natural scenery. While primarily accessible by car or bus, the area is well-connected to local residential and commercial districts, making it a perfect stop during a sightseeing trip through Chiba Prefecture.
As the grounds are vast, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please dress according to the season as temperatures can vary. Payments at shops and restaurants can be made via cash or credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, etc.). While there are English signs and some English-speaking staff, the primary language is Japanese. Photography is permitted, though restrictions may apply during specific events or in certain areas. When using the share cycles, please note they are electric-assist models.
