Mōtsū-ji is a prestigious head temple of the Tendai sect located in Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture. It holds the rare distinction of being designated as both a Special National Historic Site and a Special Place of Scenic Beauty. The temple features an elegant Pure Land garden that embodies the Buddhist concept of paradise, characterized by seasonal blooms and stunning reflections in its ponds, making it a site of immense cultural and historical value.
This site stands as a testament to the prosperity of the Oshu Fujiwara clan during the Heian period. The design of the Pure Land garden is based on the spiritual concept of recreating the Western Paradise on Earth. Today, the temple continues to preserve these historical remains and spiritual traditions as a center for the Tendai sect.
The heart of Mōtsū-ji is this stroll garden centered around a large pond. It features a unique landscape design including the Shuhama (sandbar), Kairyū (waterway), and various rock formations reminiscent of rugged coastlines. On calm mornings or evenings, the surface of the pond becomes a perfect 'water mirror,' reflecting the surrounding scenery with breathtaking clarity. Walking around the pond offers constantly changing visual perspectives.
This small hall symbolizes the history and lineage of the temple. With its characteristic curved roof, rhythmic spacing between pillars, and natural wood textures, the structure is perfectly integrated into the garden's landscape. It is a quiet space where one can truly feel the weight of history.
This area marks the locations where the original temple buildings (Garan) once stood. Displays and markers are placed to help visitors understand the layout and structure of the ancient complex.
The landscape transforms beautifully with the seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery and moss in summer, vibrant autumn foliage, and serene, distant views through crisp winter air. The scenery is particularly enchanting after rainfall, when the moss and stone formations appear vivid and fresh.
Morning and evening, when the light is soft, are ideal for photography and experiencing a sense of tranquility. The famous 'water mirror' effect at Ōizumi Pond is most likely to occur during these calm periods when the wind is minimal.

To protect the garden, entering restricted areas is strictly prohibited. When using tripods or selfie sticks, please be mindful of other visitors. When praying, it is customary to join your hands in silent prayer (Gassho) rather than clapping.
As the paths consist of gravel and uneven stone arrangements, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
