Kehara no Tanada is a breathtaking terraced rice field area located in Kehara, Ooe Town, Fukuchiyama City, Kyoto Prefecture. It has been officially selected as one of "Japan's 100 Best Terraced Rice Fields" and is part of the "Tsunagu Tanada Heritage," symbolizing the traditional rural landscapes of Japan. Situated at an altitude of 100 to 200 meters at the foot of Mt. Oe, the landscape consists of approximately 650 rice paddies arranged on south-facing slopes. The terrain was formed by alluvial deposits from Mt. Oe, utilizing water from the valley to sustain the agricultural life of the region.
The area is nestled at the foot of Mt. Oe, a mountain famous for the legend of the demon Shuten-doji. The formation of these terraces was made possible by the relatively gentle slopes and the availability of water, despite being a mountainous region. The traditional stone walls and earthen embankments have helped maintain this agricultural form for centuries. In 2007, the area was designated as part of the Tango Amanohashidate Oeyama Quasi-National Park, ensuring the protection of this integrated natural and cultural landscape.
Five farm roads wind through the rice terraces, serving as walking paths for visitors to explore the scenery. The appearance of the paddies changes beautifully with each season. The landscape is dotted with traditional houses and watermills, offering a glimpse into Japan's original rural scenery. An observation deck is available for a panoramic view of the terraces, and at the highest point lies the Oiwa Shrine, which connects the landscape to local spiritual traditions.
The most notable season is from June to August. During this period, the beauty of the rice fields coincides with the blueberry harvest season. Visitors can enjoy blueberry picking at local farms. Please note that the local cafe operates only on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 to 16:00, so it is highly recommended to plan your visit during a weekend morning or early afternoon.
Beyond just sightseeing, the area offers agricultural experiences. In the summer, blueberry picking is a popular activity. The region also features facilities such as renovated traditional houses, multi-purpose halls for workshops, and accommodation options, making it a perfect destination for agritourism where you can truly connect with nature.
The area is near transportation hubs like Oeyamaguchi Naiku Station and is surrounded by the natural environment of Mt. Oe. Local farms, including blueberry farms, offer seasonal fruit harvesting, and the surrounding area is rich in local history and legends.
When moving around the rice terraces, you will be using farm roads and walking paths. Please wear comfortable walking shoes suitable for uneven terrain. If you plan to visit the cafe or participate in blueberry picking, it is essential to check the operating days (primarily weekends) in advance. Regarding payments and specific reservation details, we recommend checking with local operators beforehand.
