Located in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, Kegon Falls is a breathtaking waterfall with a vertical drop of 97 meters. The spectacle is formed by the Ojirigawa River flowing from Lake Chuzenji, plunging down a sheer rock face. It was designated as a National Scenic Spot in 1931 and selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Geological Sites in 2007. The site is well-equipped with facilities that allow visitors to experience the raw power of nature from a very close proximity.
The name of the falls is said to originate from the 'Kegon-kyo' (Avatamsaka Sutra), a sacred Buddhist scripture. The discovery of the falls is attributed to the monk Shoto Shonin. The surrounding area features several other waterfalls with names related to Buddhist doctrines, such as Agon-daki, Hoto-daki, Hannya-daki, and Nehan-daki. These are collectively known as the 'Nikko Five Famous Waterfalls,' deeply connecting the natural landscape with Japan's religious history.
There are three primary ways to enjoy the grandeur of Kegon Falls. First, you can use the paid elevator located on the north bank of the valley to descend to the observation deck. From here, you can look up at the base of the falls from a front-facing, intimate perspective. Second, you can enjoy the view from the upper level near the elevator parking area on the north side of the canyon. Third, the Akechidaira Ropeway offers a spectacular panoramic view. From the Akechidaira Observatory, you can witness the entire scale of the waterfall alongside the breathtaking vistas of Lake Chuzenji and Mount Nantai.
The appearance of Kegon Falls changes beautifully with the seasons. Pay close attention to the volume of water and the changing colors of the surrounding vegetation to deepen your experience. During bright daylight hours, the contrast between the white water and the dark rock faces is most striking, making it an ideal time for photography. On clear days, the view from Akechidaira provides a harmonious sight of the deep blue Lake Chuzenji and the majestic waterfall.

If you arrive via the Irohazaka Winding Road, you can enjoy the changing scenery of the mountains and flora during your drive. There are also other nearby waterfalls, such as Agon-daki and Hoto-daki, making this an excellent destination for nature walks and trekking through Nikko's natural landscapes.
Because of the water spray, you may get wet near the falls. It is highly recommended to wear clothes that can get damp and shoes with good grip to prevent slipping. Payments for the elevator and other services can be made via cash or credit card. While English signage is available, it is helpful to check details in advance. To protect the natural environment, please follow all rules, such as taking your trash home and staying within designated areas.
