The Kega Kuyoto no Shidarezakura is a precious weeping cherry tree located in Iida City, Nagano Prefecture, and is officially designated as a natural monument of the city. The most striking feature of this tree is its branch structure, which cascades downward toward the slope like a flowing waterfall. It maintains a classic, powerful, yet elegant form of a weeping cherry tree, captivating all who visit. The surrounding area is adorned with stone monuments and traditional lanterns, creating a cultural landscape where natural beauty meets local history and spiritual traditions.
The site is home to a memorial tower known as "Kuyoto." The name is said to be a localized pronunciation of the word for memorial tower. While there are several theories regarding the origin of this cherry tree, one legend suggests it was planted by local residents during the era when the Wakisaka clan ruled as the lords of Iida Castle (1617–1672). The location sits along the historic Enshu Kaido (roughly following the path of the current National Route 151). The area contains place names like "Jikai-zaka" (Suicide Slope) related to the turbulent Sengoku period. This site has long been respected as a place to offer prayers for those who lost their lives in battles, travelers passing through the highway, and horses.
